i always thought of having a .357 lever gun, My father and i even talk of converting his at one time . it was a long time ago and then an old '92 in 25-20 didn't mean much to us . it was before cowboy shooting. now he is gone and that rifle will remain unmolested for at least the rest of my life and hopefully my son's as well. I managed to get a 16" 94 in 45 colt pre cross block safety ... but the Ex wife retains custody of that. So i am left with a late model ugly 21" 45 colt '94 and the take down late repro '86 in 45-70. Winchester is not an option anymore (at least new) so i am wondering if the rossi-puma are still available and if so are they any good ?

Seems like I have buckets of .357 brass, and many wheel guns to go along with them, it might be time to add a carbine to match.

any suggestions?

Dan

This past Thursday, I bought a new in the box Rossi R92 20" barrel in 38spec/357 mag. for under $500.00. I found it in a gunstore in a neighboring small city. The rifle was imported by BraziTech. The stock wood is plain, but fit and finish along with quality control seem to be very good. The action is smooth and the trigger breaks right at 5#. For the money, it seems like a bargin. The new winchesters cost over twice as much and have a tang safety, which may preclude tang peep sights.

sounds like a good deal on the rossi i like short barrels and the winchester is only 16" and 5lbs 14oz it has a tang safety, I installed a xs sight systems ghost ring sight on the reciever, retial was $1,069. street price locally was $850. the gun is beautiful

The Rossis are great guns for the money. I have a pair in 357 and 44 that I use for cowboy action shooting.

You can get them new for just over $400 delivered from Buds Gun Shop online.

Uberti also makes a gorgeous 1873 in .357. Price may be higher than you are looking at, but they are fantastic! My uncle has one he sent off for a short throw kit and action job for use in SASS. SWEET gun!

The Uberti 1873s are gorgeous, no two ways about it. I am not enthusiastic about running current SAAMI-limit ammo (36K CUP) in a knee-action system like the '73 has though.

I went through this same question recently, and opted for a Winchester 92 in 44 Mag. MSRP can be beaten by $200 or more with a little looking around. The example is BEAUTIFUL. All of these add-on safeties to leverguns are superfluous and obnoxious, but the Browning/Winchester tang-mount shotgun-type seems the least obnoxious to me.

Great rifle in one of the new Marlins. I was lucky enough to get a used M94 Win in 357 with long bbl for $300.00 about two months before Win annouonce the belly up deal. Saw one used in Cabellas a few months back in about the same condition as mine. Price tag on it was close to $700.00. 357 in a lever action rifle is a fun gun. Interestingly, in Ne. it is legal to shoot deer with a 357 in a handgun, but not with a 357 in a rifle. OR-at least it was, as I haven't checked recently.

I bought a Marlin 1895GS recently that someone had listed on one of the other web firearm forums. It had a Nikon scope and I got it for $590. Looks basically new except for a couple of small gun safe dings.

I have (4) Marlins. 1894c pre-safety, 1894cs safety, 1894cp (16-1/4" barrel, conventional rifled, and ported) and a late pre-Remlin 1894cs.

I would suggest looking for a used one, even if on Gunbroker or Auction Arms. The late model is the one I paid the most $ for and it was ordered new. IIRC, $425 and I didn't want to pony up the extra $250 or so for an octagon barreled gun that had plainer stocks and weighed more.

I hear mixed reports on all of them, but like Marlins. Don't be afraid of a microgroove Marlin because both of mine are shooters! Higher velocity is more apt to mean gas checks in microgroove, but they can be very accurate as in sub 2" 5 shots at 100 yards.

Dan I have two pre-safety 20" Rossi Model 92's. One is in .357Mag and the other in .44mag. Both were acquired slightly used for under $600 Cdn. Great shooters. I put a recoil pad on the ,44mag as it was grief personified on the shoulder with anything approaching normal loads and worse if you went up the ladder.

I shoot the .357mag more than the .44mag.

I would love to pick up a 16" Rossi/Win trapper model in either .45Colt or .44mag but haven't been able to find one yet.

Take Care

Bob

I just bought a Rossi model 92 357 magnum stainless steel carbine with 16" barrel. The dealer said that he had them back ordered since February and could not get them in stock until September or so.
