Here goes; The Contender I have written about here in the past developed a bad habit of opening when being fired. I may have written about it here, but not too sure....I sent it back to TC via UPS ($12) about 1.5 months ago. I just picked up my new G2 yesterday for a $15 transfer fee! It is nice. Initial feeling is I kind of prefer the older styling of the Contender, but I know there have been some improvements made with the newer G2. I mounted the .44 Mag barrel I had a long with the supplied walnut fore end and plan to shoot it this week some time. Did I mention TC (Smith & Wesson) IS A GREAT COMPANY?!!!

Shot the G2 with the 10 in. .44Mag tube. Did well. The newer style grips soaked up the recoil nicely. 20gr. Hercules 2400 under a 429-421 Keith.

Two things usually cause opening of the Contender upon firing:

Headspacing wherein the bullet is loaded too long or the case is not sized fully, leading to incomplete lockup, and, too much lubricant on the locking surfaces.

BTDT. That's how I know. I doubt it was the frame.

Degrease your old frame, and check to see cartridge fit is proper by removing the barrel and ensuring all cartridges seat fully flush or below the chamber entrance.

It was the frame. TC said it was worn to the point of being unrepairable. The locking "shelf" had become rounded. They have taken possession of it to destroy it.

Did they include the grip with the new frame?

I have a frame that is slightly stretched I probably should send in now that my hunting is done for awhile.

T/C just sent me 3 hammer springs for the Contenders and a set of locking bolts for my Encore. All no charge and no argument. They are a great company.

Yes, they sent me a new walnut grip and fore end. It is beautiful! I just shot some .357 through it tonight.

All of the above is why TC came out with the G2 frame. The standard frame was getting abused by the larger cartridges, and they got tired of replacing them.

I am satisfied. The "saddle" type long range sight I had on my .357 Oct. barrel will not work with the G2 due to the ridges on the sides of the receiver. I may have to mod the "leg" on the sight. I will post results.

Took the G2 out on Veteran's day and shot it over MGD45's chrono. 250gr. 429-421 over 20gr. Hercules 2400 was clocked in the high 1400s. Most of them went over around 1460-1480s. I am gonna bump the powder back some.
