I want a 45 mold that gives me a truncated cone bullet of about 185 to 200 grains.

Suggestions, please?

Thanks.

Me too!
I machined a Lee TL-452-230 TC mold down to drop boolits at 200 grains but I get a little leading. They are more accurate than the TL 230 round nose through my Taurus PT1911. I would like to try a 200 gr. TC mold with a traditional lube groove to see if the leading goes away.

You can design whatever you want at http://www.mountainmolds.com/

It's easy, the moulds are great and you get exactly what you want.

Might try some of these. If you find one that shoots well, buy that mold. ;)

H&G #68 or #130 they are clasic you can see them on the H&G cheet sheet on this site. Or I can send you a picture later. Lee and Lyman and a few others have copys that are somewhat like them.... at least close

I took your idea and created a pretty awesome looking 200gn TC from the mountain molds website. I'll have to figure out how to post a picture of it here.

I did a custom 358-429 Keith, 3 cavity. It casts great, the sprue plate is just awesome. The bullets are consistent and drop easily, I'm very satisfied with it.

I just got a .500 550gr mold from mountain molds, and it is an impressive piece of work to say the least.

A SWC is more common, which is why there's not much help coming for a truncated cone design. Which is what the OP is asking about. Apparently, nobody has an existing TC mould that they like, or has one at all. At least not a 200grain. Lee has a 230TC that looks good, but that's outside the scope of the OP too.

It's possible that a 200 and smaller TC just doesn't shoot all that well.

Lee # 90463 cast and shoots great for me. Also my Cramer # 5C does very well and is one of my favorites to cast with.

The thought of milling off the bottom of the Lee TC bevel base occurred to me too. I dislike lubing BB bullets. However, reducing the length of the body and having such a large nose sticking out might reduce accuracy by reducing bearing length. I have other bullets I like so never gave it a try. I think that the TCFN is just slightly more effective than the RN design. The SWC designs are both accurate fairly effective stoppers.

In the photo there is the lead RN and the Lee TC FN and the H&G #68 loaded. Also the Lee and H&G #68 cast and lubed. They look like they have been stored for a while. Better load and shoot them just as soon as I can,

Not the same, but Lyman's devastator 185 grain is awesome (and looks real cool?).

Hey guys, check this thread out:

http://gunloads.com/castboolits/showthread.php?t=98546

Someone was discussing the same thing a while back. They modified their Lee 230 TC down to 200 ish.

I really like all of the Lee truncated-cone autopistol boolit designs. The 230 grain 45 caliber example shoots well and feeds wonderfully in all of my current 45 ACP bottomfeeders.

I set the boolit with .020" of front drive band exposed above the case mouth on all of the Lee TC boolits in all calibers, and they run like water through my pistols--that's almost a dozen, all told. One day soon, when inspiration--recollection of need--and disposable income all occur simultaneously, I'd like to have Dan at MM cut me a TC of 75-80 grains for the 32 ACP and 7.65 MAS pistol.

You could try one of these:

And I hear you could use one of these:

BK--

I can see I will NEVER live down the purchase of the 25 ACP die set a few years back. 45 Nut threw me right under the bus after I did that. No 25 ACP pistols here, BTW.

That RD design is very close to what I was thinking in terms of shape/size/weight. I don't tumble-lube, though. How well would the TL grooves adapt to conventional size-lubing? I have a .314" H&I die, and all steps down to .308".......what do you (or others) think of lubing in the .314" die, then sizing down as needed for a given pistol? I haven't yet tried lube-sizing a TL boolit in my 450.

From the Ranchdog FAQ page:

"Bullet Lube and Sizing My bullet designs are intended to be lubed with Lee Liquid Alox and sized with Lee Precision's sizing dies. These designs work and function equally as well through traditional lube-sizers with conventional lubes."

I have a Lee TL .32 wadcutter that I have never TL'd. Seems to work fine.

In the last year, or so, I bought a Lee Six Cavity mould for their 230 TC bullet with conventional lube groove. I have a pair of 625's and wanted something that would load well with full moon clips for "action needs". The Lee bullet shoots well (about 1.250") at 25 yards and beyond and slips into the cylinder without a hiccup. I prefer a Mihec clone of the H&G #68 bullet for general use, but it undeniably hangs up when trying for a speed load.

My Mihec 200 gr RN hollow points also feed well(and performs spectacularly) but when practicing I appreciate the production of a six cavity mould.

The O.P. might try the Lee and see how he likes the 230 gr TC. If he still wants to reduce to 200 grs, he can then think about milling it shorter.

Just a thought...

Well, COOL. I see another project on the list.
