How to determine the rate of twist of a barrel...http://www.go2gbo.com/forums/index.php/topic,219757.msg1099197704.html#msg1099197704

It's real easy to determine what the rate of twist of a barrel is, all you need is a tight fitting jag and patch on the end of a cleaning rod. Insert the rod in the bore from either end. Push the rod into the bore until you almost reach the other end of the rifling. Wrap a flag of tape around the rod where it enters the chamber or muzzle. Withdraw the rod slowly making sure the rod can rotate freely following the twist of the rifling. When the tape flag has rotated exactly one full turn, measure from the tape to where the rod enters the bore, that is the rate of twist. On some rifles with slow twist like the 44mag which has a 1:38" twist rate, use a half turn of the rod and double the measurement, ie: 2x19"= 38".

I just purchased a new 44Mag and it is 1-20". I bought it specifically for heavy boolits and it does rather well.

Cool, be a nice improvement. I knew the .444 Marlin had been changed, because of the longer rifle bullets available. Must be they did the same with the .44 mag recently. ;)

I just bought a 44 mag Handi and mine is 1-38" twist. It also has a bore that slugged out to .4325". I call H&R customer service 2 days ago and they confirmed the twist to be 1-38" and said the bore is within spec.........431" plus or minus .002".
I have several 44 molds and none will drop a bullet anywhere near .434"
The rifle shoots like junk with jacketed also. How can a company stay in business with manufacturing tolerances on bores of .004" ?

Not to mention that it is the second Handi in a row I have purchased that shoots 6" low at 25 yards with the scope adjusted as high as it will go.

Buyer beware.

High Standard,

I sent you a PM regarding a mold I have that is perfect for these oversized slow twist 44's.
