Why do some guys name their firearms? Why is it more prevalent with bp long guns?

I think they have good memories with a particular rifle and just want to give it a name. Also BP rifles are a favorite of a lot of hunters.

I named three of my best friend's rifles: his .300 Weatherby with a muzzle brake="Rude Boy". His .257 Weatherby Mag="The Vaporizer". His .340 Weatherby Mag="Thor". He named his 7mm Remington Magnum="Maggie". When they get extracted from the safe, they are done so by name e.g.: Grab "Thor", would you?

Hereabouts, folk use Polish nicknames, like "Edu" (Ed, Eddie, Edward) and "Stasch" (Staschu).

Seems right peculiar to me. But then, I have a female dog named "Spike".

Wonder what kind of names they give to Arisakas. Yudo? Osikiri?

Dunno. Same reason they name certain appendages I guess. I never named my BP guns but did name my 300 wm (Betsy ) and my 450 marlin ( pig sticker).

My .50, is Michelle. Just a name. Of course if it's tossing my 250 gr REALS it could be Bonnie real quick.

My Buddy's Remington 700 .308 is "Ruthless". Many a prairie dog can vouch for that!

The name for all in the safe? Mine!

Funny how most guys name them after women and we name them after men.

Likely just the lore of history and anachronistic tendancies with old things. My favorite name for a type and brand of DA, modern revolver (not mentioned so as not to offend the egos of the fans of these guns)... Trotline Sinker. No, it wasn't a Smith or Colt.

Whether it is based in history or Hollywood fiction, I always liked Daniel Boone's name for his favorite longrifle- Tick Licker.

I have a Richland Wesson rebarreled to .40cal - "the Wesson". Not very original....

Built an Isaac Haines .40cal flinter a few years back - "Isaac". Again, not much thought went into that one.

Baby sitting a Lyman GPR .54cal - "Large Marge".

I named my 45-70 Thumper in memory of my Britney named Cheyenne Thumper.
They both thump when they hit the ground or target.

I have a name for my Taurus Ragingbull 454 but it is in Spanish and I wouldn't say it on the forum.

It may date back to mountain man and no one to talk to but their gun. I have always considered it a little childish but that has more to do with my upbringing I believe. Dad was not one to give names to anything but a person or a dog.

I can't even remember the names of my great neices & nephews , how would I remember the names of my guns? Cal .& lock type or cal. & make or model avoids confusion.
A friend names all his guns, only one I am sure of is Yimmy Jaeger.

Yimmy is one fine rifle !

Because firarms are like women in so many ways.
With any of them, if you dont let them talk on a regular basis, they wont work with you when it really matters to you.
They are beautiful and curvy and fill a need that nothing else can.
We all have one that will never leave and if anybody was ever to steal it, they would be pummeled without remorse.
I have several with names: Winifred (300 winmag) is my favorite.

Just be careful not to call one by another one's name!
