The bad news is that a tire shop in my area just converted to steel.

The good news is the manager called me to come and get the on-hand stock of lead WW. 150 lbs and probably the easiest smelt I'll ever do.

Have you ever seen a pile this clean?!

Take them to the other guy who still uses lead trade them for all of his used ones!

Or just melt them......

A good way to get on the good side of some one you can still deal with.

Where abouts are you in New Hampshire? There is no lead ban in place here yet that I have heard of so I'm wondering why they would be converting to steel and getting rid of the stock lead ones? I would have thought they would just use up what they had and then strart using the steel ones. The dealers around here (southwest NH) are still using lead, but one told me that they will be converting to steel. Is there are reason they would just throw out there lead stock when they make the conversion?

Thats some clean stuff there. Melting all that would actually be enjoyable.

Grumpy,

I live in Southern NH also. It came from a VIP store. All the VIP's are switching to steel. Only a matter of time before the rest follow suit.

I still hunt at those places that use steel. They are taking off lead and putting on steel. For now, I only care about what comes off the wheels.

A year from now I don't expect to get lead form WW anymore so I am taking in all I can now.

I gross just under a ton a year from one spot. About 400 from another. Thats enough for me. The rest I leave for others.

I started in March of last year and I think I've got a little over a half ton of clean WW ingots now. If I can double that before it all drys up I will feel very lucky.

I bought 538 lbs of shiny new weights from my scrap dealer 6 months ago. They all weighed 3 3/4 ounces each. Best melts I ever got. Found out he had them for a little less then 24 hours. Gave him a hundred dollar bill.

Tuesday I stopped by and he had a small bin set to the side with 400lbs of range scrap from the indoor reserve range. He saved them for me. I loaded them in buckets and set them on a pallet. He had one of the guys load them in my truck with his fork lift. Hundred bucks cash.

Keep the scrap man's lead bin clean and he'll take care of you. I stop by 1-2 times a week.
