Hee, hee, hee..........good one Larry.

I can't help it...I just cringe when I see or hear the terms "hardball" and "softball" applied to ammo.

Although I have never served in the armed forces, I understand that the most common FMJ projectile used in any military battle rifle or side arm is referred to as "ball".

I suppose it's not much of a stretch (right or wrong) to call FMJ ammo hardball, but the first use of the term softball I can recall seeing in this context was in an article by Jan Libourel way back when he was new at "Guns and Ammo". It was obvious to me then that he didn't know diddly about guns OR ammo and I haven't seen anything since to endear me to him...certainly not his use of improper nomenclature.

But that's just my not-so-humble opinion and probably worth everything you paid for it.

I've also heard target shooters refer to their 1911's set up to shoot 185 or 200 gr wadcutter target ammo as "softball guns". May have been an east coast/regional thing too.

It must be a "local" thing. I ran an indoor PPC oriented range at a gun club I was Prez. of. This "softball" term was in the written sign I had hanging at the entry desk that stated what could and what couldn`t be shot on the range. No jacketed ammo of any kind was to be shot on that indoor range, thus any lead bullets (softball) was perfectly fine by me - but must be at target ammo velocities.

So is a +P+ a fast ball on the inside?Robert

I think I'll stay away from that range ...... someone is bound to show up and start using spitballs .

I see the punsters have congregated here–that is the last pitch you'd wanna get beaned by!
