Anyone ever use cast bullets in a sabot out of their muzzleloader? I am thing of trying this with my TC 45XR. I need to use either a 357 or 401 bullet to fit the sabot. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks

cdet69, Take a look at this thread: http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=130759
Btw, I've had very satisfying results using unsized and unlubed Ly. 429421 and RCBS 250-K in MMP sabots in my .50cal Knight Bighorn with loose BP (FFg).

This is an on-going discussion right here in this forum.

Yep and get great results. As others said, look around and read some of the threads.

I've tried the paper patch swaged bullets from Buffalo Arms. They make a .399 and a .402.

I wasn't tremendously successful, but then, the standard pistol bullets weren't so hot in my gun either.

I saw the thread but that data was for a 50 cal. I need some ideas for a 45.

cdet69, Look at the specs for the tan MMP sabot: http://www.mmpsabots.com/tan.html
I think the .401" CB may fit those sabots.

I shot sabot out of my T/C Seneca 45 for several years with good results on both deer and coyotes. What was odd was that the sabots were supposed to be for a 357 caliber but after trying both 357 and 9mm (356) CB's, the 9mm 125 gr shot much better. I have since switched back to round ball.

Im my experience quilbilly, not odd at all, it appears that when shooting sabots, they are sensitive to diameter, which is most noticed at loading. My CVA Kodiak will shoot ragged holes with sabots and 0.428" sized CB's. Anything larger and it start to blow-up the sabots, as in a pressure spike from a "tight" fit is the best I can figure.

Lee makes moulds for the .401 diameter. One at 145gr and two at 175gr.

Agreed. My 50 will not shoot a .429 round accurately but it will .458. Tried all different weights, it just didn't like them.

I have tried using mihecs 433-300 44-444 in sabots and they work fairly well, you might try his 357 offering or lees 358-158rf cast soft. I use rb exclusively in 45 so can't say for sure
