Buckshot is what the manufacturer designates as such.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

According to the voluntary standards of the Sporting Arms and Manufacturers Institute (SAAMI), buckshot is defined as lead pellets from .20” to .36” in diameter.

However the issue of buckshot sizes appears less than clear in other SAAMI documents:

According to SAAMI buckshot pellet sizes may range +/- .015" from the nominal size according to the same voluntary standard.
So while number 4B is nominally .240" in diameter, the actual measurment may range from .225" to .255". To confuse matters more #3B is nominally .250" in diameter.

Lead buckshot pellets for handloaders are sold in sizes ranging from B (.17") to .50" and buckshot ammunition is available in with pellets up to .60".

Not all ammo or component manufacturers are members of SAAMI and even member companies are not bound by SAAMI standards.

Voluntary "American Birdshot" diameters can be found by subtracting the size from 17 and rendering the answer in thousanths. Thus #6 birdshot has a nominal diameter of .11". Obviously this does not apply to "Letter" sizes.

European shot standards are Metric and do not correspond to American voluntary shot standards.
