will have an old obsolete calibre velodog soon that someone inserted steel rods in chambers and barrel then sealed off with lead solder.
can i dip the bits in molten lead to soften / remove lead then drift out rods ?

Sure. I think I'd use a heat gun or propane torch. Put a rod down the bbl into contact
with the chamber filler, warm the chamber filler and gently tap the rod as it warms up. At
some point the solder will let go. Scrubbing out the molten lead with a brass brush may
work once the rod is out.

many thanks bill..........will try your approach and see what happens

I would be very leary of shooting it if you get it cleaned out, hard to say how hot the person got it when they put them in and probably changed the heat treat.

yup ,heatgun or propane torch as mtgun44 mentioned should "soften" the solder enough to let loose of the rods, clean-up may be a diff matter.
elbow grease and a good brass brush or probably more to get the leftover junk out .
have fun ,,,,it'll happen,,:twisted::popcorn::evil:

I'm assuming the cylinder isn't heat treated to the best of anyones knowledge? If so I'd heat it up till the solder flows and get as much as possible out. Brownells used to sell a product called "Solder-Wick" or something like that. It would wick any excess solder off a joint. THe same thing could be used here. After that 4/0 steel wool on a brush will remove the rest of the solder with enough patience and effort.

It is only a Velo Dog, more or less a .22 LR.

Unlikely it was ever heat treated, but no effects from soft solder temps if it was the eutectic
63-37 a very common alloy that melts around 365F.

Bret's idea is good. Look for some copper grounding flat braided strap if you can't find
solder wick, which is basically the same stuff with a flux built in to it. Sucks up excess
solder from electronics being reworked.

I think this is what Bret was talking about.

A ten-foot long roll is $9.99... don't know if that's good or bad.

You can also find the same stuff at Radio Shack. It is a store stocked item.

As long as you are at Radio Shack already, see how much a solder sucker would cost. They were a lot easyier to use on circuit boards than the wick.
