Can someone help me figure the weight of a chuck of lead I may be buying? The dimensions are 8'x18"x18". This is the keel from a 100 year old sailboat. Trying to figure out a weight estimate to know the value. Thank you, Tom

Lead weighs .409 of a pound per cubic inch.
8 feet=96 Inches
times 18 inches
times 18 inches Equals
96 x 18 x 18 = 31,104
Times .409=12,721 .536 Pounds
12,721 1/2 pounds of lead is quite a chunk.
Good luck, and be careful you're dealing with a bunch of Weight. 12,721 pounds.

That would equal 445,235 bullets weighing 200 grains each.
How do you plan to move and have it shipped?
You would have to know the composition of the purity of the Lead for a real price.
Spot price of lead last 24 hours is 85.53 cents a pound.

Lead weighs 708 lbs per cubic foot.
8 ft x 1.5 ft x 1.5 ft = 18 cubic feet.
18 cubic feet x 708 lbs = 12,744 lbs.

I think I did the math right. :)

Those figures were just an estimate, but now that I have a formula I'll get excact measurements and go from there. This has some veins of what looks like concrete, but much softer and several large rods of brass. Now that I know its over 5000lbs it will be much easier to come up with an offer.
PS This is about 10 miles from the house and I plan on using a chainsaw and logsplitter to get it into a size that will fit into my pot.

Wow, that's one big chunk of ballast, and most likely the lead is very pure! I'd love to see a picture of that myself!
