Yesterday I shot a very large cow moose with a 71/84 Mauser sporter that I put together a couple of years ago. I shot her at 238 yards with a paper patch pure lead bullet. Broke her spine, and had to shoot her in the head when I got close. I think she would have weighed over 1000 lbs. on the hoof, maybe closer to 1100. I had help dressing her out, thank god, at 67 years it was almost too much for me.I was one tired old man before it was all done. I would post pictures, but I am too inept to make my computer work. Tried it many times and just no go. The happy hunter, the Toolman.

Congrats! When you get rested up find a youngster to post the pics for you. I like looking at fresh-killed critters and custom rifles.

Can you describe the load you used ?

JMtoolman

Sure can, the load is 31 grains of 4198, with a 395 grain paper patch hollow base bullet in pure lead. Cast from a mold that I made myself. I use a tuft of dacron on top of the powder. After patching, I lubed the paper with alox and ran them through a .447 sizer. They need a good crimp to keep from moving in the magazine. This is a load for my gun only, yours may be different. Best regards, the toolman.

That's a fine harvest, and a really lovely rifle you built. Good job with irons at 238 yards!

Great job Toolman!!!!!!!!!!

I'm also 67, and I know what your saying about having help.

I took a huge and barren cow elk on Aug 1st this year, and simply could not have done it without the help of a friend that lives close to where I was hunting.

He also has a BIG!! walkin cooler as part of their green house operation, and with the daytime temps in the 80 - 90s also had to have the cooler close by.

Get to this age and without knowing Doug was standing buy and available on a any given day, I wasn't hunting, simple as that.

Must have help!

WOW, what a shot! GREAT JOB!!

Keep em coming!

Geeez, just packing out the heart, liver, and tongue would've been a chore. Those ole cherry rifles got it done back then and still do today. To bad my old bones don't wear like those rifles. Must of been a fantastic hunt. Nicely done.
