I got ambitious and decided to tear apart the Marlin 39 I bought yesterday and install the Octagon barrel I'd had hanging around here.
Folks had warned me that you can really screw up these Model 39 Take Down receivers when trying to remove the barrel. I placed the barrel in the barrel vise, used mt Remington 700 action wrench with a piece of leather under it so as to not scratch the receiver. Gave the handle one good hit with my hand and it unscrewed perfectly. No big deal.

the octagon barrel screwed on and headspaced perfectly.

I sanded the stock and forend and gave them each five coats of Tung Oil.

This is the second Marlin 39 where the type of wood and the grain are not even close. I tried to stain the forend to get it to look more like the butt stock but it just wouldn't cooperate. I might have to make a new forend out of a hunk of American walnut I have in the shop.

Other than that I think it came out nice.......

Clapped out Marlin 39.....$250
NOS barrel from Numrich Gun Parts.....$75
Another Octagon Marlin.......PRICELESS!

Roy: I have a 1958 336 .30-30 that has the same problem with the stocks not matching It has given me fits for a couple of years now.

I recently came across some stain/tint at the Woodcraft store near me. This stuff comes in a variety of colors, and you can even stain your stock a brilliant dayglo Chartruese Green if you want. Point it is pretty serious stuff. www.woodcraft.com

one or two drops of dark walnut and red mahogany would bring that foreend right into submission. A little goes along way.

I was actually tinting the truoil on my 1895 project seen below to darken up the last coats.

It's a shame too as that buttstock has a lot of character. Much more than my 1895 does.

I have a nice 39AS that I have done the action job on and need to Redo the stocks soon. I'm also looking for a pre safety Hammer and trigger sear so I can get rid of the rebounding hammer. I just can't stand the "boing noise" everytime I pull the trigger on that gun. I see your's is an earlier gun.
