I`ve been shooting my 44-40 with factory ammo for a while. It works flawlessly with WW ammo. The problem I have is that when I`m handloading with lead bullets, the bullets seems to be shaved and sometimes they stuck at the upper edge of the chamber. Can I use .429 jacketed bullets instead ? Wasn`t the original ammo in Western days made with pure lead bullets ?

Kind regards

Yep, original was pure lead bullets. I don't know about trying to get them to feed through a '94, but I have no problems at all getting the 200 gr Lyman bullets to feed through my Rossi '92.

Are they shaved in the reloading process, or after trying to chamber them? some dies can result in case necks that aren't very concentric, and the seating die tries to push the bullets in off of center.

I THINK Winchester and Remington both still make the 200gr flatpoint bullet with the crimp groove in the right place for .44-40.

Thanks Alan
They are shaved when I try to chamber them.I am using Lee bullet mold and have the correct cartridge overall length.
