So I did some penetration testing with my 45 and 44 mag and the current ingots are great for the 44. They are straight WW.

However I want a softer boolit for my 45. I have WW, stick on WW, and the little wrapper looking dental lead scraps.

I am primarily looking to get the boolit to expand a little, right now there is little deformation shooting through some pretty hard stuff.

Is it possible to give me any recommendations over the net? I don't have a hardness tester.

You've got to minimize the antimony. Use a lot of the stick on WW, and very little of the clip on WW.

I use 50/50 SOWW/COWW and 2% tin. So technically 49/49/2. I only add the tin to help with fillout so I can cast at 650*. You could omit the tin and raise your casting temp a bit, 700-725, to help with fillout. My 49/49/2 works great in my 1911.

If you are looking for expansion form a solid lead slug @ 45acp speeds, aint gonna happen IMO. Even dead soft will only slightly deform @ impact vel below 850fps. Now add a HP, then something like a 50/50 clip ww/lead mix will expand nicely @ 850fps.

+1 for what Fred said.
The 45 ACP was all about a heavy slug hitting at bowling ball speed, to knock down an enemy.
Kind of like a train (45) hitting a semi. The train (45) wins. ;-)

+1 on that!
Lyman makes a Devastator boolet for the 45.
Look in the Mid-Way book or on line.
Mid-Way USA.
It is a 180gr. hollow point.:Luvcastboolits:

Then, of course, there's the fact that the slug is already 1/2" wide...
