Pull J bullet & replace part 2

Okay I pulled 50 j bullets from some 7.62 x 54R steel cases.
Powder charge was 46.4 grains of powder.
Bullet weight was 148 grs.
I have 160 gr cast gas checked boolits and the left over military powder.

Question is what would be a safe starting load using the reclaimed powder and cast boolits. I was thinking drop to 30 grs should be safe?

Also have some 180 gr cast boolits what powder charge?

Now if this is a bad idea I can use loads from Lymans books with the powder I have on hand.

Tom The ammo I used was CZ light ball and the powder averaged 47.5 grs I used 30 grs with a dacron wad with a lee 185.What country is that ammo from? And yes 28-30 grs sound about right as a start , I would recommend a tuft of dacron over the powder at those levels though.

Tim, thanks I'll have to get some dacron, any concerns about using the steel cases?
I'll have to check to be sure but I think this was CZ light ball also. I have two spam cans of it.

Start at 28 gr and use a 3/4 gr dacron filler. You will get much better ignition with the H4895 similar burning rate milsurp powder (the square cut flake type) using the dacron filler and accuracy will be better. Work up in 1 gr increments of that powder to 32 gr or until accuracy goes south. With the dacron filler the sweet spot accuracy wise will be in that range when velocity is in the 1800-1900 fps range.

Camfer the inside of the case mouths and flare them with a Lyman M die or Lee die before loading those cast bullets. Don't recall but I'm assuming these are GC'd and sized appropriately?

Yes gas checked, sounds like good advice I load a few up and see how they shoot.
Also just ordered 200 pieces of brass cases.
