I have a BP 44 1858 Rem repro. I would like to shoot a flat base round nose in stead of the round ball.
Is there a mold that would fit the bill? The cylinder diameter is .445. Would I need to size/lube the boolits. I'm thinking to size to .446 and maybe a mold drop diameter of .447-8.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

45 2.1- Thanks! TGhat looks like what I'd want. I guess I'd have to size/lube this bullet. my cylinder measures .445. Would I size to like .446 or 7? Would regular boolit lube work fine? It seems like a 200gr cast, whick would be about 50gr heavier the the 454 round ball I have been using. I guess I'd just have to play around with the charge a bit. Any suggestions would help. Now That looke like a real boolit.
edit -cylinder diameter to .447

I have the bigger version that casts 0.456". The front band is that dimension. The next band lower is a little smaller and the base band is smaller yet. I think yours would be the same set-up and fit accordingly. I would cast them out of very soft lead and lube in an oversize die with a good blackpowder lube. There are a number of blackpowder lubes listed here in posts, use the search feature. I think the base band will probably fit your cylinder and will shave the forward bands slightly when you seat the conical.

Myself, I use a lubed felt wad under the bullet, and don't worry about sizing or lubing the bullet. Do use soft lead though. Anything with some hardness, can be a bear on your loading lever.

Have fun.

45 2.1- So your are using the 456-220 mold? You say that the bands are tapered smaller rear and bigger toward front. This repro is the Pietta version. Do you think that the 456 dia would still fit a cylinder with a .447 Dia. I'd also stay with the pure lead. Most comes from the dentist. And yes about the BP lubes also.

Mine is for another pistol, not yours. I was describing the fit for a Ruger Old Army. The LEE numbers I gave you should fit your pistol, though I haven't tried that particular mold.

Nice thing about the lubed wad is you don't have to worry about lubing the front of the cylinder to prevent chain fire.

brdz,l I have that revolver model and the 90381 -It works perfectly. Pan lube em smear a lttle on by hand or just squirt Crisco intothe chamber mouths with a cakedecorator after seating. The rammer takes care of all your sizing needs and the conicals are actually a little easier to seat than round balls.
