View Full Version : Tikka - - - 30 -06
This one " followed " me home today.
Tikka Model 695, Cal. 30-06 with a Burris 6 X.
Can't wait to get this one to the range.
I adjusted my trigger to 12 oz., clean, crisp, with no over travel.
Quite often, the safety won't work with settings this low.
The safety works fine on this rifle with the 3/4 pound trigger pull.

The feeding problems that will often occur in a " staggered box " magazine don't occur with this system. This action and feeding system is unbelievably smooth.

Ben I'm sure you'll have it shooting little itty bitty groups soon. I'm thinking I need to buy a modern day rifle with a scope soon too, as milsurp open sights are giving me fits. Good luck with the new toy ...Ray
Many thanks Ray,
P.S. - - Does anyone know where I can get a 2nd Mag. for this rifle.
Tikka Model 695, Cal. 30-06
They are pricey !
I'd like to have a spare, but I hate to pay $80 for a magazine.

Real nice piece Ben. Guess I'll have to take picture taking lessons from you, [smilie=l:.
If you're going to take picture lessons, it needs to be from someone who knows what they are doing. I'm a rank amateur.

I only own one Tikka and it's the most accurate rifle I've ever owned; even with cheap jacketed bullets it shoots exceptionally well.
I have no doubt that your new 06 will make you very happy.
I know that all rifle calibers that Tikka makes are built on long actions. Only the interior magazine lengths are different.
Mine's chambered in 308 but I've thought about trying the magazine out of a true long action Tikka so that I could test the longer VLD bullets without having to seat them so deeply. I don't know if it would work though.
HollowPoint
I'll bet that it would !
I could be wrong but I think that my rifle is no longer made, it is a
Model 695, I think it has been replaced by the T-3.
I once owned a SAKO A-5, 30-06, a super accurate rifle, this one
has SAKO wrote all over it.
I understand TIKKA uses SAKO barrels. I don't think it gets much
better than a SAKO barrel. This rifle was purchased by the orig owner,
test fired and put in the back of a gun safe for over 10 yrs.
The blueing inside the action and on the feed ramp in front of the mag. is 101%.
Obviously, the bore is PERFECT!

What makes a Sako even better is when Ben gets a hold of it!!!!
Now, where's that pop corn? ................ It's time to watch one of the masters at work!!!

WOW ! ! Am I a happy camper...........
( Misprint on the primers...they are WOLF Primers.)
I glass bed all my rifles, I'm almost afraid to touch this TIKKA ? ? ?
Sorry for the poor quality photos, I shot them with my cell phone.
BTW......The g/cs were seated with my new Gas Check Seating Tool

Ben, I take it you won't be selling Saeco #301 after all? Glad to see the Tikka is a shooter!
Maven :
You know the story behind the # 301 is a strange one. I've shot it in several of my other 06's and it was only a fair to mediocre performer. One other interesting side note.....my NOE , 311284 HP that shoots very well in 5 other 06' rifles is only a mediocre performer in my TIKKA. ? ? ?
In the TIKKA the SAECO # 301 is KING ! ! By the way, 16.0 grs. of 2400 has shot so well that ( so far ) I have not even tried any other powders in the TIKKA with the SAECO # 301.
The SAECO # 301 left Alabama, this past Friday, headed to Buckshot for HP'ing .

That's darn good shooting.
Do you have any idea what type of velocity you're getting with that combination? The reason I'm asking is cause I'm getting groups only slightly larger with my K31 with 16.8 grains of 2400 and magnum primers.
The cases are pretty close to the same size so whatever velocity you're getting, my velocity can't be to far off.
Funny how that same 16 grains of 2400 seems to work well in just about any rifle I've tried it in.
HollowPoint
Yes, 16.0 grs. of 2400 has been called by some " A Universal Load".
It has shot well in several of my rifles.
Sorry, I don't own a chrony. Some of the other fellows may can get us within 50 fps. or so of the speed with their own experiences.

Ben, Since my #301 performs passably well in my '06, I decided to put it up for sale in the Swapping & Selling subforum. (If you're interested in a 2nd mold, we can talk.) Btw, I had an original Cramer RG-4, but it cast much too small to suit my one and only '06. Beagling it improved things greatly, but the resulting CB's were aesthetically offensive; i.e., they looked terrible.
Maven :
The # 301 that I sent Buckshot is a 2 Cav. SAECO,.....So, I'll have the ability to shoot a solid or a HP from the same mold. This particular mold is shooting in my TIKKA so well right now, I'm scared to change a thing.
You can see that the nose on my SAECO # 301 is a nice snug fit in the muzzle end of my TIKKA.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v494/haysb/002-11.jpg
There is a clear " moral " to this story.
Just because you're selling a mold ( or I or someone else ) because it doesn't shoot well in your particular rifle or pistol, that doesn't mean that it won't shoot well in another rifle or pistol.
I was at a point where I was loosing faith in the # 301 quickly until the TIKKA came along.
The next thing I'd like to know ( but probably will never figure out ? ? ) is WHY does the TIKKA shot the bullet so well and all my other rifles shoot the same bullet so poorly ? ?

Now, that is the kind of shooting that I was talking about in my thread Saturday.
Since you don't have room in your safe for that rifle, I will just keep it in mine.

Nice rifle Ben. Don't want to steal the thread, but when I saw mention of the #301 I have to convey a story. A friend came into a (somewhat) sportered 03A3. Between he and I we came up with enough parts to return it all original, other than the the three screw holes on the side of the receiver for the Williams scope mount. Other than that it is back original all the way -- took a bit to decopper the barrel. Just need some plug screws to 'clean up' the receiver. It shoots cast RCBS 30-180-SP well enough to compete in military bolt matches. So, with doing all the swapping and rebuilding he managed to wind up with enough stuff to put together a National Ordnance sporter that had a 2-groove Rem bbl. So, I D&T'd it for him and put on a Leupold mount and an old K4 that was gathering dust on the shelf. It got set into the sporter stock the 'real' 03A3 came in. After high power last Saturday I got the honors of sight in. Well, after a little bore sighting and adjusting, within three shots it was on paper at 200, a couple bold turret adjustments, a couple fine adjustments, and voila. It was holding the top left quadrant of an SR X-ring (3"). What a nice surprise! MOA with cast at 200. The load was #301 over 21/4227. I've had a love/hate relationship with this boolit for years, but it seems to like this gun. When it works, it works VERY well. Anyway, my buddy wound up with a couple of nice rifles.
edit: I forgot to mention that we had some VERY good shooting conditions that day.
sundog
That's very interesting.
You know I'd still like for someone to explain why it shoots in some and won't shoot very well in others. What is the factor ( or factors ) that make the difference ? What's your opinion ?
An inquiring mind wants to know ?
Thanks,
Ben

Boy-howdy. (That's Okie for boy-howdy). I wish I knew, Ben. The #301 design is certainly just a little different from all the others. My buddy and I have some more rounds loaded, and if weather cooperates in couple weeks we'll be back at the range and that ole gal another whirl, just to make sure.
I have an 03A3 that dotes on the RCBS 30-180-SP and spits the #301 all over the place. Go figure.

Buckshot and I were talking about this bullet last night. Like I told him, the SAECO # 301 is sort of a " Mystery Bullet".......when it doesn't......it doesn't , .....when it does......it does......there doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason ? ? My TIKKA has a conventional 4 groove barrel. I can't figure this one out ?

I used to have a Tikka T3 hunter in 30-06. Dime sized groups @100 yd. Traded the rifle for a boat, sold the boat to help buy an engagement ring, got the boat back. Now if I could just trade the boat back for the rifle, all would be right with the world.
