Has anyone tried the 140 gr. Hornady FTX bullet in the 35 Rem. I'm thankful for any help.
Mark.

The only size FTX that I can remember for 35 caliber weights in at 200 grains. The bullet you describe sounds like the Monoflex for use in the 30-30.

Other than being a mite undersized at .357" it should work well enough. I would look at 150 grain Remington load data and work from there. On the Hornady site there was a fellow that took a caribou with it so it seems like a worthwhile endeavor.

thanks for the info. I'll try the remington load data.

The pistol bullets don't hold up to well at 2300 fps. Usually limit use to varmits.

Mhat -

Howdy !

Great minds think alike !

I have a box of 140gr FTX awaiting its turn @ the range.
( J-word bullets, I realize ).

The Rem 150 PSPs I've had such good success with are runnin' short on supply !
Thought the 140 FTX might make a good alternate.

I'm shooting a Marlin M336 XLR in .35 Rem.
My best accuracy loads have been with a full case ( 14.5gr ) of Trailboss and Rem 91/2 Mags; under the 150s.

But even better, has been the grouping of: Rem 150 PSPs over 18.6gr I4759 and CCI Mags. My tests have shown that using a small wad of tissue over the powder, and then " PUFFLON" filler up to base of bullet; has helped shrink groups
nicely !

I've been using a LEE Collet NS die with the arbor sanded-down .002" under factory spec when loading .358" cal bullets.

For shooting .357" cal bullets, I'd imagine I'll have to take my spare .35 cal LEE Collet NS die mandrel; and sand it another .001" smaller still ( .003" under factory spec ).

For my purposes, I'm only single-loading my .35 Rem loads; and am doing pure accuracy work on paper targets. My loads aren't intended for "field " use.
I also DO NOT crimp my .35 Rem's, for such target work.

The Hornady 140s are rather truncated in their design and construction, so they have a long-for-their-weight straight body section. From a visual comparison I've done, I don't believe the seating depth will much different; comparing the 150 Rem bullet to the 140 Hornady. I use a Sinclair bullet "comparator", which I've bored-out one hole in; to allow its use on .35" cal bullets.

Biggest thing I need to do now is $$$ for a good " wind flag " set-up.
Both of my accuracy loads ( esp the Trailboss load ) are S-L-O-W, and thusly are highly succeptible to wind effects; and any windage mis-steps I might make.
Heck... I could fire a shot, and eat a ham sandwich; before the bullet reaches the target !

The Trailboss load has next to nothing for recoil, and is not all that loud; either.
The I4759 load I mentioned, has all the recoil I care to have, when shooting the XLR off a bench; for target work.

My XLR cleans-up w/o having to use a brush; at all ! To get into the corners of the Ballard riflling, I've had great success w/ Gunslick " Foaming Bore Cleaner ".
Last time I cleaned the rifle ( after 32 shots in-a-row un-cleaned ), I did so using
only 2 wet patches to clear the bore; after a 25min soak w/ the foaming bore cleaner.

I follow-up my cleaning regimine w/ a patch soaked in Montana Extreme
" Bore Conditioner ". I leave the bore wet, and take a first ( non-record ) "fouler shot " to set the barrel up for the extended range cession(s).
All this is of course... my rifle... my loads.

I'll have to get back to you about the 140s, once my windflag gets here.
I suspect I'll try them out w/ I4759; first.

With regards,

Some years back I shot some 158gr JHPs from my Rem 141 in .35. I used 36-38gr IMR 4895 and it shot tidy little groups at 100 yards. At 2000-2100fps they would have been explosive.

Seems they designed the bullet for the .357 but sounds like fun. I wasn't terribly impressed with their .45-70 bullets so never tried the 200 grainers designed for the .35 Rem. For j bullets I like the RP 200 for rifles and the Hornady 180's for my Contender. 405 RP just happens to be my go-to j bullet for .45-70 as well.
