I'm looking for a good hunting load for my Ruger BH using a commercial cast 215gr SWC and 2400. I was thinking of working up to Kieth's suggested max of 19gr. However his 220gr H&G bullet is a little different which is why I'm asking this question here before I do something foolsih. So doe anyone know if the data is interchangeable?

I believe 2400 today is hotter and cleaner then 2400 of Kieth's time. So you may want to start lower. I shoot a RCBS 210 it actually drops 220 gr. and I've had good luck with IMR4227 with Felix lube. But there will be guys on here with alot more experience then me.

I'd start a grain or two lower with the 220gr and see how it does, the 5gr diff in the boolit won't really matter that much.

here is a link to some loads I shot out of my TC with 18gr of 2400 and a 225gr boolit.

I shot all three different wt boolits with the 18gr of powder, all with the same point of aim, that makes up the group in the lower right.

Been doing a lot of shooting with cast boolits dropped from a discontinued Lyman mold#410459. Once sized and lubed they weigh in at 223grs.
10 gr of HS6 for a good target load and 16 gr of 2400 for hunting.

The Keith #258 220gr H&G, like the Lyman 220gr 410459 is not seated as deeply in the cartridge case as a lot of the commercial cast 215gr SWC.
The drawing for the group buy #258 H&G shows 0.3250 from the base to the center of the crimp groove. Eyeballing with my caliper on a Lyman 410459 base to crimp is 0.3475 and a Laser Cast 215gr SWC is 0.3925.
I would probably start around 15-16gr of 2400 for the LC 215 and work up.
Over the last 30 years I've shots thousands of the Lyman 410459 with 18-18.5gr of 2400 with 18 grains being my standard. Using 18.5 grains got me up to 1440 fps and 1015ft lbs M.E. out of 8.375" S&W Model 57.

Yessir, KO41! NICE!

I was lusting in my heart for one of the remake Model 58s, but too many horror stories about poor workmanship have scared me off.

Thanks ko that is exactly what I was looking for. Looks like I'll have to place an order with Montana Bullet Works for their H&G #258, dang they're expensive. Are there any other casters offer that bullet that ain't so pricey?

Mount baldy - does and they also offer a 275 gr if one is inclined-price is about the same -- Leadheads offers a nice 230 gr Keith-machine cast they are cheaper-i have shot a number of these in the past-- the 18 gr load should do the deed- with either bullet - -because of Mr. K i bought a 410459 in 1978- I have not always been able to shoot his load though -- do not know how it would do with the H&G -- nice slide show -- several I would like to have-- btw Keith did not like the Lyman his real design was the H&G- so tells Mr john Taffin- another shootist
