View Full Version : Manhole covers vs 50 BMG

Would manhole covers work for a 50 BMG gong? I know the AP rounds will go right through it. I don't have any experience with the 50, but a friend of mine has one and a place where he can get some free manhole covers.

I'm sure that distance has got a lot to do with how long they would last. Whadda think?

I think they are cast. Hard and brittle. I think they would be prone to shattering or breaking.
I am no metal expert, just my understanding for what it is worth.

Shoot 'em up. If they break, haul the pieces to a scrap yard.

If he can get them for free, then YES, they will make great targets/gongs. Just make sure you angle them so ricochets are down and not back at you. There is a video somewhere where the shooter had his hat knocked off by his own ricochet.

They will be good for very few shots.

You will simply poke holes in them until you happen to hit a reinforcing lip in the bottom of the lid and then it will be in several large pieces and dust will be floating in the air. :wink: Still fun though.:lol:

Shoot them at anything less than 1200 meters or so, and they're toast within a few shots. I've fired 50 bmg out to 2500 yards, and they still pack one heck of a whallop at that range!
I was a gunner on a M2 for 5 of the 10 years I was on active duty USMC.

Jester, I had decided the next time I went to San Antonio, I was going to look you up, just to sit down and shoot the breeze. I had thought I was going to Corpus this summer, for a conference, but it didn't happen.

I've pulled and replaced manhole covers most of my life in the phone business. They are cast iron and weigh approximately 300lbs, depending on the foundry. Be forwarned!

I understand most are cast. But mine are solid Steel plate. They were cut out by a torch. They were used in Drain systems.
