Anybody ever re-barrel a MKIII. I had a nice MKII stainless 5.5 bull. My son wanted it so I let him have it and took his MKIII 6in standard. I want a Competition. Probably cheaper to just trade up on a new MKIII Competition?
Thanks

Yep, I would just trade it in or sell it outright to fund the new Conpetition.

Rebarreling a MKIII is one of the more tough rebarreling jobs. The barrel is threaded to the receiver, and there is much machining to do after the barrel is timed like milling the feed ramp, etc. There are so many around that it would be easier indeed to trade for a MKII (my preference) or a new MKIII.

How about a Pac-Lite barrel?

Picked up the new Competition yesterday. I knew it would have right handed grips on it, I'm left handed. I called Ruger and they would trade the right handed grips for smooth for $10.00. They had blemished left hand for $10.00 and I could keep mine. I put the right handed on my son's MKII and ordered the left for mine. Put the black plastic on mine for now until the new ones arrive. I had to notch out the grip a little where the mag release is on the MKIII. Going out now to see how it shoots.

Ruger barrels are not all that good, no matter what model. It all depend on what need you have for the pistol. Ruger factory barrels may be good enough for you, I don't know.

I have two Ruger MK IIs. One has a Douglas barrel with a match chamber (work by Clark) and the other is box stock. The Douglas barrel will shoot rings around the Ruger barrel.

What will the Douglas barrel do at 25 yards? I just got back had some 3/4 in. with Fed. Auto Match off the hood of the truck with sand bags. 4 cups of coffee for breakfast. Trigger needs the creep taken out.

If that suits your purposes, then you are a happy camper. On an AVERAGE, the Douglas barrel will deliver groups 1/2 the size of the Ruger barrel. There are allot of factors that come to play in that and the ammo is no small piece of the puzzle. With match ammo the Clark Ruger will give consistent 10 shot groups of less than 1" at 50 yards, sometimes 1/2" at 50 yards, if my heart is pure on that day. I have only put it on paper at 25 yards to sight it in.

The Clark Ruger will outshoot the 3 22 LR rifles I own.
