I introduced myself to the forum with pictures of some of my .32's, which are a joy to shoot. My first love however, would have to be the .357Mag/.38Spl cartridges. I recently traded a 65-5 3" for a M28-2 Highway Patrolman. After I made the trade I started to question myself, until today.
I took a little time and snuck off into the backyard with some loads I've been using for IDPA, a 125 grain SJHP over 5.2 grains of W231. It's a little hot for IDPA Power Factor but I like the load, and it seems to be doing well through my 686. Recoil in the 686 is noticeable but very manageable. So, I said to myself, "Self, you've got a pretty good amount of that loaded ammo just sitting there, and that new to you M28-2 just begging to be shot." So I did. Here are the results at 12 yards double action.

I'm currently on the hunt for a few speedloaders and some speedloader pouches. I can see this becoming a fun gun to shoot in IDPA in ESR.
Edit to add: Recoil of the same loads in the M28 were roughly the equivilant of shooting my M30-1.
Best regards,

The Model 28 aka HIGHWAY PATROLMAN was one of my favorite S&Ws during the 70s. Great as they were and an excellent base gun for conversion to 44 Special. I got into 45 autos...and 25-2 and 625s later on. It's unbelievable that they are going for $500+ now...I bought a bunch for under $100 out the door 'way back when....but my hourly rate was about 1/5th of what it is now, so I guess $500+ ain't that bad.
IIRC Midwayusa has the Safariland speed loaders for model 27 and 28...been using them since they came out. I guess I need to dust off the S&W 627s from the 80/90s gun of the week period at S&W. They haven't seen daylight in awhile.

Last I checked, Midway had them listed but out of stock. I found the SL Variants for the 27/28's but they are $33 a piece! I can't really perform well with the HKS, which seems to be my only other option so I may take the plunge and get the SL Variants.

Lovely piece!! Just FYI, there was, at one time, an S&W recall on the early M27/28s...I don't recall which dash-numbers...so you might want to check to see if yours has been "upgraded."
BTW: I've got a couple of the (very!) old Hunt Engineering rubber speedloaders (think "Dirty Harry") that you can have for the price of postage if you can't find anything else.

Nice 28 you have there! There is a guy on ebay selling Dade (the original Dirty Harry) speedloaders and pouches at a reasonable price for that gun from time to time. IMHO the 28's are just as nice as the 27's and you can buy the extras with the difference. Enjoy!
Why wouldn't a nice clean model 28 be worth $500? Any new N-frame is $300-500 more and I certainly don't see clean handguns in general priced at only 1/2-2/3 that of a new gun.
I've never had a 27 but do appreciate them. That said a 28 is a good substitute - especially if it is to be a carry/shooter.

Nice 28, I've got my local shop on notice I'm looking for one. Each time I stop in for something I remind him. The first few times he'd pull out something in 38/357 out of the case and say 'I've got a real nice....." and I'd just say "But, its not a 28." :D
They may cost more but, the SL Variants are worth every penny. ;)
Hey "other ED K," you're right.
Old Model RUGERS bring three and four times their original price; why not a very good S&W that SHOULD still be in production, but ain't.
The only differences between a 27 and 28 are better finish, some checkering, target hammer and trigger, and more choices of barrel length on a 27. (I converted a 27 to 44 Special with a factory 6.5 inch Model 24 barrel...cried when it got stolen, along with a bunch of other guns.) The 8 3/8th inch Model 27 shoots like it has radar...just a PITA to carry.

I would willingly pay $500 for a nice M27 or 28 before going out and buying one of the new S&W revolvers and dropping between $650-$1000. I had a hankering for one of the PC SSR 686's until I shot one. After talking to the owner and he started to tell me about the great trigger it had etc. I was thankful for my current 686. For the cost of 6 reloaded rounds of .38 I saved myself around $700. :)
The only other N frame I've ever owned was one of the Thunder Ranch edition M24-4's, I tried and tried to like that gun and never could get to like it. I'm already liking this M28 much better than the M24.
