Does anyone have a 357 herrett that seems to be "short in the throat ? I just received a 10" TC barrel that I am trying to load cast in and I am having a hard time finding a boolit that will seat out far enough that the gas check is not into the body of the case ! I have the RCBS 180 and it has to be seated below the crimp groove , And the noe 200 gr RCBS clone will chamber if seated exactly to the crimp groove !I am seriously considering having a bore riding 170 gr .358 boolit from accurate mould drawn up . Any thoughts or sugestions. I am waiting on a 30 herrett that I hope is a little more forgiving .

Back in the day I shot those barrels with bore riders. The sample 30-30 10incher I had did shoot an inch at a hunnert using the popular Lyman 180 using 18grains 4227 with the 2X scope. ... felix

many of the herrets did have long throats , i have a 14" 357 herret and a 10" 30 herret that has shorter throats ( at least compared to their brothers i got rid of ) i never did try cast in the 357 i got rid of but it shot 200 grain round nosed jacketed great , the 14" 30 herret i got rid of i couldnt even get a heavy jacketed close to the the throat ( in hindsight i should of had it chambered for a 30-357 herret ( 30 cal w/ a 357 herret chamber ) one thing about a short throat ( other than that some prefer them ) is that it can always be made longer ( or re-chambered to a 358 jdj )

If you have one with a long throat, not much you can do, if, on the other hand, you have one with a short or non-existant throat, you can have it throated for your dummy round.

Drawings in Loadbooks USA show a Lyman #358429 at 168 grains as a plain base, might be an option.

Also shows an RCBS 38-162 SWC with gas check.

Good Luck,

I had almost forgotten about this untill it came back around today! I think I should be alright , preliminary accuracy and pressure signs with 25gr. AA1680 and NOE'S 200 grRCBS clone seem to be working well! Now to wait untill spring to do some real load work up! Thanks for your Ideas and sugestions.
