...............I swung by Big5 on the way to work Friday and picked it up. Forgot to take a rod, patches and carb cleaner so I just left it in the trunk. When I got home Sat AM (freezing in the shop!) I pulled the bolt and proceeded to clean the barrel. The barrel is a wash. Rounded lands, pretty rough in the grooves so I'm 50% glad and 50% unhappy.

I'm a bit unhappy as it's a really nice one. The stock, action, bolt, and barrel all carry the same serial in the same font. Well not the stock, but it's not marked through and redone. I'd say it was the original conversion from the long rifle. Side swivels with the one plugged in the underside of the buttstock. Still carries 90% finish on the metal. The bolt looks new and the bolthead locks firmly.

On the other hand I'm kind of glad the barrel is crap because the other M95/31 conversion to 30-40 Krag is a real winner, but I don't need 2. For this one I haven't decided yet. If I could get a 7.62x54R reamer for a .309" throat I'd do that in a NY minute. Possibilities are: 35-40 Krag, 40-60 Maynard (altered Krag), 38-56 WCF, or 40-65 WCF. Three I'd consider with some more thought, but would be more work would be .444 Marlin, 30-30, or 38-55/375 Win.

Consider the 40-50 BN, you'd like it. AIM has 95s also with bayonets for an attractive price.
