NOE 360160 Wide Flat Nosed Group Buy is Here.
360160 Wide Flat Nosed Group Buy is Now Open.

This is a shorter, lighter version of the very successful NOE 360180WFNGC boolit that has the gas check shank removed to the first driving band. It was an idea proposed by Cord for his .38 special. This will only be available as a plain based boolit.

This group buy will be run in conjunction with the Brass only 360180 group buy currently being run. It will close and ship at the same time, so time is short. Current production schedule is in December.

The molds will be produced by Night Owl Enterprises (NOE) in their 1, 2 and 4 cavity Brass mold blocks as well as the 1-5 cavity aluminum mold blocks. They will be available in the RG2 and RG4 configuration in both Brass and Aluminum. Hollow pointing a single cavity in the non-RG mold blocks is available.

Please indicate what you want in your order. You can also order your mold with a cavity drilled for the temp probe that NOE offers (Link with explanation HERE (http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=100997)).

The group buy will run until about two weeks before production. I will make a final call for payments then.

Brass molds will be machined in C360 Free-Cutting Brass.

Aluminum molds will be machined from 2024 Aluminum used for high strength structural and aircraft applications. Tensile strength range 30,000 to 63,000 psi
Sprue plate (blued), alignment pins, and hardware will be carbon steel.

The cost will be as follows:

Brass Molds
1 cavity Brass $90.00 Ea.
2 cavity Brass $94.00 Ea.
4 cavity Brass $111.00 Ea.

Aluminum Molds
Single cavity mould $68.00 Ea.
Double cavity mould $72.00 Ea.
Three cavity mould $79.00 Ea.
Four cavity mould $85.00 Ea.
Five cavity mould $92.00 Ea.

Hollow pointing one cavity and furnishing a double ended pin for any of the above moulds would be $35.00 extra.
If you want to fashion different HP profiles, an extra blank pin would be $1.50

RG Molds
Two cavity Brass RG2 HP mould $118 Ea

Two cavity Aluminum RG2 HP mould $96.00 Ea

Includes one set of hollow point pins and one set of flat nose pins.

If you want to fashion different HP profiles for the RG2 an extra blank pin set of two (2) would be $4.

Four cavity Brass RG4 HP mould $152.00 Ea.

Four cavity Aluminum RG4 HP mould $126.00 Ea

Includes one set of hollow point pins and one set of flat nose pins.
If you want to fashion different HP profiles for the RG4 an extra blank pin set of four (4) would be $8.

Shipping and handling will be $10 per order and shipped priority mail. Insurance is available for $2.90 per mold. If you live outside the United States contact me, and I will work with you.

Lead time is 4-5 weeks after Group Buy closes.

Once we are ready to go, I will place the order with NOE. The molds will be shipped to me and I will distribute them. I will accept bank check, money order or PayPal(plus fees). If using PayPal contact me first.

The mold is machined to use LEE Commercial 6-Cavity handles (not included).
A Lyman, RCBS type top punch is furnished with each mould as well as a sample of Bull Plate sprue plate lube.

Visitors from other forums are welcome to participate in this group buy.

A Bump for a very nice boolit design......

The "very successful" 360180 WFNGC
reminds me of another boolit design-
the NOE Ranch Dog 311-165 RF (RD)

Consider this; doesn't the 360180 WFNGC
kinda look like a

"Ranch Dog for Magnum Revolver?"

If you can see what I mean, then
wouldn't that make this 360160 WFN
design a

"Ranch Dog for Standard Revolver?"

....

I've had issues in the ppast with the WFN designs, but in .45" when used in my FA83. Unless I drove them 1100 fps or so I had accuracy problems. And at the 900 fps where I wanted to shoot them....they tumbled.

I know I'm doing an APPLES/ORANGES sort of question here...but would this mold the 160 grain stabilize at 850-900 fps in Smith revolvers??

And...RG2...RG4? Two or four cavity blocks??

SciFiJim

It would depend on the twist rate in your revolver. A stability calculator here.

Just got word from SwedeNelson today.

Some good new and bad news.

The bad news is that the shop is still behind schedule.

The good news is that I will keep the group buy open until the 17th so that more people can get in on it.

I know that further delay is frustrating, but the quality of NOE molds is worth it!

Cord

This has been a quiet Group Buy so far, despite the 18 orders, and I think
that might be because there was no discussion thread to start it going.

Also, there was a question about the stability of this boolit; Jim supplied a link
to a stability calculator, but still the question may have put some people off.

So, while I don’t want to seem like a cheerleader, there is still some time left
to explain why I believe this will become my “go to” boolit for .38 revolvers.

First , the stability issue:
I measured a Speer 148gr HBWC and not counting the little bump on its nose,
it is .642 inches long, and yes, I know the hole is in the back, more on that later.

Plugged into the stability calculator, I get:

Speer 148 HBWC......642 long, Stability Factor is 3.498 Green (Stable)
360160WFN Solid.....620 long, Stability Factor is 4.127 Green (Stable)
360147WFN HP........620 long, Stability Factor is 3.792 Green (Stable)

Both versions of this WFN seem to be more stable than a target HBWC !

I used the same .360 diameter and a 1 in 18 twist for all three calculations.

I think this is a valid comparison, because if you look at the body of the
360160WFN, you can see that, including the full diameter area at the
base of the ogive, it is essentially 4 band WC body with a WFN on the front.

Granted, this is not a perfect comparison, but it is close enough for me,
so I’m not at all worried about the stability of this particular boolit.

Please put me down for a 4 cavity brass 360160WFN. I've been planning on 160 WFN for my main shooting bullet for the .38s and .357s in my stable. Thanks for getting this one going.

Cord

For many years my favorite load for J frame revolvers has been
a Speer 148gr HBWC loaded backward over Red Dot, it has a
nice little stepped nose that I slip a Hornady gas check over.
I have excellent accuracy and effectiveness with this load.

The problem is that I have to buy them and the gas checks,
and they are very soft, and so require great care in seating them
to avoid deforming the thin edge of the hollow base portion.
And, like any full wadcutter, they are not speedloader-friendly.

So I have been looking for a cast boolit design to come close to
this configuration. I could have bought a recently run Cramer HBWC,
but I wanted more lube grooves than it had, and it would still
have had the thin edge seating and speedloading issues.

I think this boolit in HP form, that I will call a 360147 WFNHP should
be about as close as I will get. It has everything I was looking for,
and I will start at 40/1 and test for accuracy, expansion and leading.

Even if it is not quite as good as my backwards HBWC load, it should
be very close, and it will be much faster to make, much easier to load,
speedloader-friendly, and lots cheaper, to allow for more practice.

I am very happy that NOE will make this in brass too.
