I'd like to find out if there has been any successes out there using Lyman 257420 with the 25-'06. Is "varmint-like" accuracy possible with this combo and if so, to what velocity? "Varmint-like accuracy" to me with cast boolits would be 90+% reliable squirrels kills to 125 yards and a bit farther on bigger varmints like racoons and possum. I'd reach for a different round if the critter happened to be a coyote or other chicken thief; however, I'm seeking at least .22WMR performance (yes, at a fraction of the cost). I'm assuming the standard 10" twsit.

Also, and more importantly, are current copies of Lyman 257420 molds worth a hoot in terms of castability; i.e., making near perfect boolits without undue mental anguish? The last few Lyman molds I've purchased (I swore, I'd never buy another) in .30 cal have cast "narrow" boolits and Lyman doesn't give a hoot. They'll replace the mold you're complaining about, but send you another cut from the same worn out cherry.

Thanks for your input.

I've been working with the RCBS 120 grainer for over 4 years now in 25-06. It will definately do what you are asking for. I've taken my Encore out to Oklahoma P'doggin twice and used the boolit over 19 grians of 5744 (1800 fps) to whack dogs regular out to 150 yards. I've driven the boolit to 2300 fps, but really didn't do a lot trying to get max velocity with it, I'm quite happy with 1800 fps as it does all I want to do with plinking and small game and such. I've also fould 20 grains of 2400 to be quite accurate as well. As usual, 10-15 grains of Unique will make anything go bang, but velocity suffers. 12 grians of Unique is quite accurate for a plinking load, I don't remember exact velocity off hand but it is 1500 or less.

The RCBS boolit is a bore ride design and as such accuracy will depend on how well the bore ride portion fits your rifle.

John,

What's your alloy and how much do the boolits weigh as they drop from the mold?

You'll get much better results from the Lyman 257312 and Unique. In fact everything you've asked for.

Wow... so we're approaching 130 grains ready to fly.

Thank you,

I like that idea; unfortunately, 257312 is out of production. Any thoughts, 45 2.1?
