That is a very rare book, quite a few were printed but somehow I think they got wet, not sure, but there were very few ever shipped.
I bought my copy from Elmer at his home in Salmon sometime in the 70's. I hope who ever gets it enjoys it, instead of trying to make a dollar.

Gentlemen,

I should probably post the asking price, and what Elmer Keith told me at his home in November of 1981.

Asking price is $500 shipped and insured Priority Mail.

I hunted Elk near Salmon in 1981. After the hunt, I stopped to visit Mr & Mr's Keith at their home. He had several copies of the book "Safari" in his shop. I purchased copies for myself, my brothers, and a good friend. He told me the following history.

In 1967 (iirc) Truman Fowler was running Safari Publications. He convinced Mr Keith to write a book about his hunting trip to Africa. Keith obliged, but by print run time, Fowler was no longer employed there. The editor who finished up proofing the book felt free to edit a little, and deleted some material. Mr Keith was NOT pleased. When the first copies came off the presses, he was sent one. He always put into his book contracts that he had the final right of refusal if changes were made. He refused to allow publication unless the deleted material was restored. The new publisher refused. The book was never offered for sale.

Another part of his contract was an advance payment, and then books in lieu of additional cash payment on the initial run. In this case, a total of 200 books were crated and readied to ship to his home. They did not get shipped due to the cancellation. This would have been late 1968 or early to mid 1969.

Down the road, and it is late 1981. I stopped in Salmon and visited Mr & Mrs Keith in their home. After visiting a bit, we retired to his studio in the back yard. He had several copies laying on his roll top desk. I had never heard of it, so I asked. The story was related to me, along with the fact that a company had bought Safari Pubs; and that in inventorying the warehouse, this crate was found. The new warehouse manager allegedly told the shipping clerk to go ahead and send it out. So, here is treasure if you are an Elmer Keith fan. I bought copies for myself, my brothers, and a good friend.

This good friend died this spring, and I came into possession of it. I have only ever seen one autographed copy for sale. It is at ABE Books, and they have it priced at $750 plus shipping.
I am not sure my friend ever actually read it. He was a collector.

thanks for looking,

Rich

I had an issue with my PM box. I did not know it kept all of the PM's I sent. Soooooooo, it was full. I figured out how to empty it, so if someone sent me a PM and it kicked back, you can resend it now.

thanks for looking,

Rich

I'll bet some Keith fans would like to have an autographed article by him. He signed this for me during the 1974 NRA convention in Atlanta from the G&A Blackpowder magazine. It is my treasure...what a guy he was.
