I have mine with State Farm. Just an umbrella policy. Told them what it was for an they said no problem.

CCW Insurance? I thought that was the shotgun in the trunk of the car!

Seriously though provided one acts within the law is it a matter of general liability such that an non-specific liability umbrella would have your back as tomme carries?

Never heard of it. Does it even exist, beyond the basic umbrella policy?

I carry (pun intended) Concealed Carry Insurance from USCCA:

https://www.usconcealedcarry.com/shield/

I am a retired Insurance Major Claims Adjuster. If you ever have to use your CCW it will be a "Deliberate Act", not an "accident". Chances are, your liability carrier will deny coverage for this "deliberate act". I don't wish to take the chance.

It often depends on where you live. My home town had always seemed to be in favor of legitimate self defense. However, a few miles away is Cincinnati which appears, to me, at least, to be rather hard on people who exercise self defense. You will almost certainly need a GOOD attorney. They are EXPENSIVE! "Shield Coverage" from USCCA is not very expensive.

Read up on it and make your own mind up about it. Do NOT stick your head in the sand.

Dale,

I know that different locations, etc. make things variable, but can you give me a rough
idea what sort of costs we are talking about here? If one wanted $100,000 or $500, 000
of insurance, approximately what sort of annual premiums are being quoted? What are
the things that they ask about to evalutate the risk? I know in a home fire policy it is
how far to a fire dept and where the nearest fire hydrant is located, etc. What changes
things in a CCW policy? Age? Training?

Thanks

Bill

First of all, understand I am NOT an expert on CCW coverage. I am new to this just like you. However, I am aware of general implications and I have seen what can happen. I have investigated a few shootings for business/insurance reasons.

The coverage is priced by the limit, only. You can get all the information available from that link or call them on the phone (same link).

Shooting, even a justified shooting, is taken VERY seriously by the Law Enforcement Community. Understand, after the shooting you will be the SUSPECT. The police will NOT be your friends. You WILL need an attorney just to stay out of jail. The police will look at you as if you are "Guilty until proven innocent" - not the other way around. No disrepect intended to our friends in law enforcement, but I suspect they will agree with my statements. Maybe Al will want to chime in here...

Those are the reasons I decided to sign up for CCW Insurance. Hopefully, the comments will be of use to those reading this.

I live in Idaho. We go on the notion that if you have a CWL YOU are the good guy. Common sense is the rest of the equation.

I really do feel sad for a lot of you that live in socialist states.

Sorry for dragging up an old thread, but I've been thinking of getting some form of insurance for self defense usage. I've been getting emails from USCCA for a while now, and for some reason I get the impression that it's a scam of some sort. I've also looked at the websites of the links above in this thread, and some of them are kind of limited, one only offers protection from criminal charges, another only reimburses you AFTER you've spent the money (something hard to do if you don't HAVE the money), so I'm really confused about which policy to get. How can I check, and make sure that any of these are the real deal, and not just a way of collecting premiums, then finding loopholes to get out of coverage? (ie: You used reloads, so we can't cover you. Or we only insure folks that use revolvers to defend themselves, etc.)

I'm kind of sensetive to this, years ago when I owned taxicabs, we were paying premiums of about $100 per week per cab, and then it came out that the agent was collecting the premiums, but never paid a dime to the insurance company!

I don't mind paying for insurance, but I want to make sure it's a policy that's actually going to pay if/when needed!

Yea I was kinda thinking they are a scam too or at least just a money making thing as you contact them you get emails every day.

Good Idea I just asked my insurance agent to check into it. Being on a fixed income I cannot come up with the up front lump sum payment these groups are asking for. So I called my agent to see if he had a plan that I could make payments. He is checking into it.

as to the USCCA I could tell you my ill feelings toward their offering a lifetime guaranteed membership rate only to then come out with the self defense shield **** and tell those with the guaranteed price for life membership price to pay up or get out. I was an early member to sign up because the group had good information, that has given way to you must buy the insurance and a membership plan much higher than our guaranteed for life low cost membership.

I opted to get out.

I am looking at other better options. It appears that a liability rider form our insurance company may be better option.

Yea I figured they were a rip off I told them quit sending me emails.
