hi ,,, i have a couple of levers ,one is a plinking henry 22mag and the other is a1954 manufactured win mod 94 in 30-30.
now i also have a 1873 trap in 45-70 and would like to have suggestions on a lever action in that cal ( i love the 45-70 cartridge ).
what would be my best bet for a lever in 45-70 bearing in mind i'm on a limited budget and i don't mind buying a used rifle either,
i will say one thing i don't particulary like the marlin ss/laminated stock scout (it's too short for my likeing) given this info what would you be looking for ? .
the longer the barrel the better.
any ideas?...

Budget? Well that pretty much says used, good condition Marlin 95. But, my preference is the Win 86. To even come close on $ you'd have to get lucky, search around and find a good condition, used Miroku 86 repro.

If you can catch it in stock, the Rossi Rio Grande may be up your alley. 8)

You can't go wrong with the 1895CB. Having to choose between BC & 1895CB.....IT'S NO CONTEST...1895CB hands down winner!

I love my BC 45-70, but you were asking for Lever suggestions. ;)

Mines no longer scoped as the first shot with my 350gr. FP's ate the guts out of that scope. 8( I only wanted it scoped for development anyway, so now it's back to original condition with the Irons only. hehe

Get you a Marlin 1895 with the standard barrel (which is 22") with a walnut stock and blued metal. They shoot like crazy, reasonable in cost (everyone wants the guide guns) and it will out live you! The extra weight is NOT a bad thing either if you choose to load it up a bit!

T-o-m who owns and shoot on of those "traditional" Marlins

I have a Marlin 1895 made in the 1960's sometime that I use for hunting, and a Marlin 1895 CB that I use for fun. You won't go wrong with either of them. I took a bull moose with my 1895 in Northern Alberta a couple of years ago. One shot, one moose. All the guys hunting with .300 Win. Mag. rifles were taking 3 and 4 shots to kill their moose, and losing a lot of meat in the process. With my .45-70, you almost eat right up to the hole.

I've got an elk tag for late November and I'm using the 1895 for that hunt, too.

Hope this helps.

I prefer the Marlins for a hunting lever, they allow you to fit a scope if necessary, which is a nice option to have, especially for load development/experimentation/old age. If you were a John Lennon fan when I was a fan (no one had heard of the Beatles until I was about 19!), you are old enough to be using a scope.

If you come across a 444 Marlin in your search, they are a good option as well. I currently run a H&R Trapdoor (Black powder and Gould HP boolit) clone and a 444. Tempted to buy an 1895 45/70, but there's not much to choose between them. The advantage the 45/70 is the ability to launch bone crushing heavy boolits with is a nice option if thars bairs about! The 444 is a bit better at range, having a flatter trajectory, but in reality, there is not much in it. Either will serve you well.

I have a plain old 1895. 22 inch barrel, wood stock, great shooter. The Marlins are so dang easy to clean from the breech. They also are pretty simple to strip completely down for cleaning and lubing the innards should the gun get wet.
