22 Bator in a Hornet

Okay fellers, looking to start my next "research project."

I've got a Lee Bator 22 cal that drops nice boolits. Musta got lucky and got a nice one, because everything seems to be in spec.

So, what's the best alloy for these in a 22 hornet?

I've got everything from pure lead, WW, lead hammer alloy (commercial alloy, known mix) Lyman #2, Linotype, and Monotype.

So, does anyone have a good starting point for me?

I'm planning the same thing in my 218 Bee with the same boolit. I'm gonna start with my standard WW mix. It's not like we're popping them out of a 220 Swift. If I can get good, repeatable accuracy at 2K-2200 it'll do anything I ever want it to. It's gonna be "shoot and see", 'cuz there's no way to say for sure what will work.

You can always start at rock hard and work backwards if it floats your boat.

Once you become proficient and master the art of casting with the little 22 caliber Lee Bator mold, you'll be able to call youselves, "Master-Bators."

Air cooled clip on wheel weights should be fine. I drive them at 2300fps out of my .223 Rem.

That's good news Jeff. I'm naturally lazy, so any extra work I can avoid is a good thing. ACWW is nice and simple.

koehlerrk, I have a hornet lying around not being used anymore. Perfect cast 22 caliber I should think. Keep us posted on your progress. You might get me motivated to give mine another go (I only gave up on cast due to laziness and other projects). My objective is to shoot 60gr cast (it's a nice round number and the same size as the very accurate 55gr j-words I use and would achieve the same velocity, almost).

Not gonna happen. Using linotype on small animals will be like shooting them with FMJs.

303guy, will do. My only problem with these projects is that I have a full-time plus job, (aka, 50 hrs a week is "normal") I have three kids, a lovely wife, kids' are all in sports, plus I go to church Sunday mornings and manage to get some sleep at night. So my time for my hobbies is a tad limited. This is why I write it all down before I get started, so when I do get an hour or so for casting, I can make the most of it.

I'll definitely keep folks here updated.
