So, now that I am restoring a Lyman 45, piston upgrade?

I boiled my new to me Lyman 45 to remove the 1000 year old crusty Supermolly lube that was in it. In the process the paint bubbled or just came off all together. So I hadn't planned on restoring it but, now it's apart on the bench along with a can of Krylon "Pumpkin Orange" and I'm prepping it for paint.

I've seen a piston upgrade mentioned here a few times, one that uses O rings. I figure while I'm at it I might as well do that too.

Problem is I can't seem to find one, in Lyman's catalog or Website, Can anyone give me a hint as to a part number or what to call Lyman and ask for?

Thanks, In the threads I've read in the past I always got the impression folks got the o ring type piston they were upgrading to from Lyman fairly inexpensively, must have misunderstood.

Are you talking about the pressure nut with two O-rings? If so, it's available and can be ordered directly from Lyman's web-site.

you might seriously consider getting a new pressure screw too...Item 9

these parts will work in a 45 even though lyman doesn't mention it.

THANKS, JON! Lyman redid their online catalog recently and screwed up the listings so I can't find squat anymore. I was digging through the thread Onokie mentioned, but there's some old information there. Last time I filled one of my 45s I cut a disc from a manilla envelope and formed it into a cup that fit under the cap and was supported by the bronze ring, that stopped most of the leakage but I still want to upgrade. Since I gather from that thread that the pressure screw thread pitches vary depending on production run, it's best to get both to make sure they mesh.

I just googled "lyman 450 Pressure nut"
that was the first page.

regarding thread pitch...
I cleaned up and built several 45s and (2) #1s and a 450.

I know the #1s had different thread pitch,
I can't remember if any of the 45's were different than the others,
so I didn't mention that specifically...Plus the basket of parts I got
from one member here (which I built (2) 45s from also had
450 parts and some RCBS parts.
Also of the many I've put together,
there have been 2 pressure screws that were repaired/brazed
on the head end...also one of the pressure screws in the "box
of parts" was broken...as in, Head snapped off.
So learning from others mistakes, I figure it's a good idea to have a spare.
