I went out to try a few more loads in the BFR.
15 of Unique did about 1115FPS. OK, easy to shoot, about 4" high at 25 yards.
32 of 4227 went 1163FPS, and I started to notice the recoil. If it had smooth grips, I'd say it rolled up in my hand, but with the Hogues, it was the whole gun that rolled up. 2" high at 25 yards. Just right.
33.5 of 4227 was 1225FPS. It's starting to bark now, and gets my trigger finger just a bit.
35 of WW296 found my limit. 1425FPS, and I got recoil sensitive right away. The gun may have a lot more left in it, but I can't think of a reason to put myself thru that kind of concussion and pounding.
Time to try some lighter boolits. I can get the velocity for longer shots without quite so much thump. I'm thinking 325-375 gr instead of these 440 grainers.

Heck, you still had 3 more grains of powder to go.:kidding:

Those top-deck loads out-do 1873-level 45-70 RIFLE loads by a significant margin. To each his or her own, but I'd rather not herd such a beast myself.

I just picked up a set of pachmayr decelerators for a SBH to try on mine.
For $30 from Cabelas, I figured they are worth a try.

They are soft, fit my medium sized hand ok, and have an air pocket in the back for cushion. Plus I think they look good! Haven't used them yet though.

Here's a BFr with them on it so you can see what they look like.

Yes, when I shot the BFR .500 I quit after one shot and put my glove on! [smilie=s: factory, Double Tap if I remember. That huge gun can come back I tell ya.
Now I shoot a 440 gr boolit from my JRH at 1350 fps with no pain and can shoot it a lot with no glove. The gun is lighter so it is hard to explain.

It's rather easy to explain. That .500 Smith load runs 500 fps faster than your JRH load and burns a LOT of powder in the process.

Well, powder weight adds to boolit weight for sure. But the weight difference in the guns should take care of it.
I do not remember the boolit weight or velocity of the loads we shot.
Can you show them?

That's a 400 grain bullet at 1,800 + fps. I am sure with the ten-inch barrel of that BFR it was getting a full head of steam!

It was sure accurate though.

In the .454, 31 grs. of 1680 is the most accurate thing I've ever shot, and not uncomfortable. 32 grains bruises the palm of your hand (and that does for the accuracy). Gun just comes straight back and kicks you!
