i just picked up a marlin pre safety 336 in 35 rem. i have the rcbs 35-200-fn and the noe copy of the ranch dog 190 gr boolit. i'm looking for some load advice. i plan on using this for deer hunting. i see that many people like h335, around 38gr. that's one powder i don't have. i do have 5744, varget, re7, and i4895. is h335 worth me spending $20 on? is it really the best overall powder for the 35 rem?

thanks!

In my bolt action I have had better luck with powders other than H335 . Mine shoots the best with cast and jacketed with AA2230 and 3031

HornSurgeon -

Howdy !

I always liked the old Lyman manual load data.

In it, I believe the accuracy load for .35 Rem w. 204gr cast w/ GC was
35.5gr IMR3031.

For a 200gr J-word, the accuracy load was 36.5gr IMR3031... I believe.

They cited use of a Marlin 336 as the test rifle.

Please check out their data, for yourself; prior to doing any loading.

For years now, I've always thought IMR3031 to be the benchmark powder,
for .35 Remington.

Best of luck in your endeavors !

I haven't used H335, but of the powders you list as having, here's some published STARTING loads with a 358315 204 grain cast Gas Check in a Universal Receiver, 22" bbl:

5744 - 19 grains for 1387
RL-7 - 21.5 for 1364

Both of these powders top out at around 1760 fps, which is in the ball park for all the other powders listed. The slowest powder in the listing I found was VV-N133, between H-335 on the high end and IMR-3031 on the low end. Neither 3031 or 335 were listed for cast bullet loads (not that they couldn't be used).

Hope that helps. Check loading manuals for the max loads of these powders.

Another vote for 3031.

I've also worked up to 2125 fps with Re7, but groups were double (4 in.) the 3031 (<2 in.).

Good luck.

Jerry

Edit to add: RCBS 35-200-FP

I use 4895 exclusive under that bullet in my .35 Rem (M91 Argie rebarreled). IMR, milsurp or H4895 et all I use 37 gr for 2150 fps+/-, excellent accuracy and very deadly results on deer. There's 3 groups for zero in the photo. 1st group in front of magazine, 2nd after sight adjustment with both at 100 yards. Botom 1.5 moa group is at 200 yards with 3 moa sight corection. Point of aim was 6 o'clock on bull.

35 Rem. = 4895, 3031, or RL7

Congrats on a fine rifle! Had excellent results with RL-7 in a Contender and my 336 seems to like it under J-word Hornandy 180's and RP 200's. Ranch Dog moulds ordered yesterday so will have to get back with you on them but I'll be trying RL-7 and 4198.

well, i think i'm going to try 3031 around 35 or 35.5gr. it seems there a a number of people that seem to like that.

I just ordered the Ranch Dog 190 grain mold myself for my 336 in 35 remington.
My rifle seems to like H335 under the 220 grain speers I've been forced to feed it while I wait for my mold.
Has anyone shot the RD boolit loaded over 6 or so grains of Red Dot?
Looking for a plinker. (I have 12lbs of Red dot on my shelf)

I've pretty much used 3031, at first with the Lyman 204 grain boolit, then later with the RCBS 200 grain FNGC. I've tried Winchester 748 with almost-as-good results. I don't plink much with these, though--just a few rounds downrange to make sure my sights are still on before deer season. 3031 and the RCBS bullet seem to just go together.

What's been said for 3031 also holds true for 2015. Those powders are in the right range for hunting loads in the 35 REM. I can never find that Ranch Dog data when I want to, aha, I did this time! I don't know about the H and IMR brands of 4895, but I used some of Jeff Bartlett's Russian 4895 once, a caseful of it didn't get up to pressure and left some unburned powder for me. http://www.ranchdogoutdoors.com/bin/TLC359190RF/data/loadnotes02.pdf

Funny you should mention the Russian stuff ,I tryed out a different load yesterday using 36.5 grs of pulled Russian 54R powder(probably real close to what they are selling) with a 200 gr saeco and had some kernels left in the barrel. dont know what the vel was but accuracy was very good.

Pressure with it was very low in the 35 Rem, and if I remember right, velocity was way below what I was expecting with one of BaBores 35Rem hollowpoint bullets. I remember going to 2015 after that, extrapolating from Ranch Dog's 190gr data data, what a difference!

Nice work! :drinks: Just happen to have some 3031 as well. If I'm reading the date correctly it's a few months short of it's 10th birthday. Think I need to quit my job and hire a maintenance man. Haven't even degreased my new RD mould, hope my 336 shoots as well as yours when I finally get to it.
