I have a boat load of pewter mugs ive been saving from the outings with my wife to the flea market/thrift stores. Ofcourse they all have the classic glass in the bottoms. Can anyone who has melted them down before tell me what i should do to get the glass out? Can i just melt them down with the glass in it or is that a bad idea?

I have always broken the glass out first. Then the little chips just float up when you melt them down. Probably wouldn't hurt to leave them as is, and just melt them. Certainly, you're not going to melt the glass. Just make sure they haven't been near liquids before melting them down. enjoy Mike

Uneven heating of the whole glass could cause it to break violently, and splash the melt. I'd just drop an ingot in each one to crack it. What falls out is that much less to skim.

Get a pair of pliers and unfold the rolled edge around the base. Grab and pry out the retaining ring. Hold the mug by the handle over a trash can. Hit the edge of the base above the glass with a small hammer or metal rod, striking downward. The glass will pop out, usually without breaking. Hit around the rest of the base to crack out the caulking. Drop it on the floor and step on it to make a more compact package for the pot.

Well, there's an obvious solution-

Lay them on a board. Stand back 25 feet. Shoot the glass with your favorite cast boolit. Works for me!

I just throw them in the pot with everything else I'm melting & put the lid on. Skim after. No fuss, no muss.

Small hammer with glass end of mug under a rag works for me.

Thank you for bringing some cast boolit sense to this thread!

Correct me if I'm wrong, isn't pewter an alloy of zink and tin? If so, what use would that alloy be in casting boolits? [smilie=b:

Modern pewter is over 90% tin with antimony and copper.

Set them up endwise and use a pistol to shoot out the bottoms, good practice.

So when you go to recover your boolits now you got glass mixed in. Fun.
