View Full Version : 100 yard 357 Loads?

Picked up a very nice Rossi SRC in stainless that shoots pretty well at 100 yards with factory JSPs. (Little less than 2" groups-don't really know if that is good or not as I never had a 357 rifle or carbine before). Want to start loading cast and am looking for a 100 yard load.

Sadly, our shooting is relegated to one round in the gun and all shot from the bench at 100 yards, so I am looking for something that is "accurate" (though as you can see I am not sure what is accurate for one of these at that range).

Thanks,

Bob

Took a 130lb doe at raght about 100yds using the Buffalo Bore 180gr Cast.

2" at 100 is just fine for iron sights. Wouldn't grouse at all.

There's a lot of guys loading the C358-180RF group buy, and I think most will tell you somthig like 15gr LiLGUN or some such. (don't quote me, I don't have it handy).

I have a Marlin 1984 CS in .357 magnum and with my cast 150gr LSWC loaded with 6.0gr of Unique was a pretty accurate round in my Marlin.

in my marlin useing the gb 180grgc without the gas ck and 4.5 gr of tight group shoots pretty well and constant for a light load at around 1050 fps i also use 12.0 of 820 and 15.0 lil gun for heavy loads with a gas ck , both work well with the velocity champ going to lil gun, both shoot equally well

The C358-180-RF group buy works nicely with 14.9 grains of Lil' Gun.

I'd be plenty happy with 2 inches at 100 yards with irons. It's better than I can hold by a good margin.

I have had a lot of luck with Skeeter Skelton's load

Thompson 158 gas check 357156 Hornady checks.

S&W cases Mag small pistol primer and "Old Lot" 2400.

Fast and hits with a lot of punch.

Just one of those loads that seems to "Work"

Caution, if you use "New" 2400 reduce loads and work up. This is a hot load.

Good Shooting,

2" with non custom/target iron sights is as good or better than just anyone can get with any rifle. Mick.

Ditto on twotrees suggestion. However, I've not found any difference between "old" and "new" 2400. The Lyman 358156GC bullet is an excellent one for accuracy at magnum velocities. Work up towards 15 gr of 2400 under this bullet. Another excellent powder for this bullet/.357 cartridge is H4227, work up to 15.5 gr. Both loads are hold over loads from a M28 S&W and are quite accurate in my Ruger Security Six, 10" TC barrel and a Marlin Carbine belonging to a friend.

In my Marlin 1894 Cowboy I use two loads: 12 grains-IMR4227 with the Lee C358-180-RF GC group buy bullet and the other load is
13grains-IMR4227- with a Lyman 358156 GC bullet

How do those Rossi's and Legacys compare to the Marlin as far as quality and longevity? I'm really hankerin' for a lever .357 and .44!

I prefer the M92 platform, not that the M94 or M1894s are bad or anything. May need some tuning, may not need it. I go here http://www.leverguns.com/ for all my Levergun questions.

The EMF brand M92 (made by Rossi) are nice. And these don't have the Marlin jam or .357 Winchester double feed problems.

In .44, the Rossis may be slightly overbore and do best with cast bullets sized for the barrel. I'd buy Marlin or Winchester in the caliber if I didn't want that.

The Rossis are stronger, and you can get one in .454 if you want.

Thanks again for the suggested loads.

Two inches at 100 yards isn't too hard keeping in mind we are talking about every single shot being from the bench (I have a good rest) and that they must be loaded one at a time. Putting the bead on this one at 6 o'clock causes the factory JSPs I have been shooting to print just about center on the target.

My Rossi was very accurate(I guess-based on your responses), but didn't feed right (not that it mattered-did I mention we can only load one round at a time and shoot all of them from the bench?) so I sent it to the Smith Shop, a relatively well known Cowboy-type gunsmithing shop and it works perfectly.

Haven't had the chance to try any of the cast suggestions, but hope to do so in a few weeks.

Thanks one more time.

Bob
