I was offered a Higginbottom mold that throws a .440 bullet and turned it down, mainly because I have no experience with pp and don't want to needlessly spend money to just frustrate myself. Everything I read says I should have a .442" bullet??
Is .440 to .448 too much difference for my .449 bore rifle?

it will work just fine if you load it right. soft lead , black powder and paper that makes a snug fit...

+1 to powderburners comment.
I do know of one fella that is getting very good accuracy with a .440 bullet from his 45 2 7/8 business rifle.

............Some original BPC rifles had PP'd boolits that were BORE diameter!

Well, since I work in graphics, it occurred to me to draw a .440" circle in my draw program, then outline it twice at .002", the thickness of the paper I just picked up, and guess what, exactly .448! Being "mathly challenged", that was a revelation. Now I get it..2, 4, 6, 8. This stuff sure is hard, ain't it? Think I'll see if the mold is still available...yeah, go crawling back.

Except that paper .002 thick will not add .008 to the bullet, but slightly less. No matter though...

...........Bagdadjoe, as was stated above when the wet paper dries it will shrink mainly due to being stretched as you roll it on (if you patch correctly).

better a little small anyway than too big??? Thanks for the info.

Now for a frivolous note..my wife was sewing and I snatched a piece of her pattern paper. .002" tough paper...
I can see it now...."I'm getting great results with the McCall's #204 business pants pattern in my Plains Hunter, and Simplicity prairie skirt pattern paper with my Sharps rifle"....
But seriously, if your belove-ed is one that sews, might check it out. It's plentiful and cheap..used ones go for a quarter at yard sales.
