As a life long cast bullet and muzzle loading hobbyist it was just a natural that eventually the two blended together. So, over the years I've become the happy shooter of a .40 with 16" twist and .458 with 24" twist, not to mention Green Mountain .50 fast twist, for heavy stuff besides round ball. And, I'd have a .58 except that the barrel maker lost my order along with the hollow base boolits I sent him. Oh, well.

But, the reason this thread is getting started is I was wondering how many folks out there are boolit shooters in various forms of muzzle loaders.
My .40 is a rebarreled Lyman Great Plains Rifle. The .458 is a sleeved TC New Englander. The .50 is a Renegade. Nothing high dollar, just a big bunch of fun.

Well, I have a Ruger 77/50 50 cal and a Green Mtn fast twist 50 carbine barrel on my Renegade that get 500 gr. paper patched bullets. I rebarreled a Rem 700ML with a 35 cal. barrel that gets 250gr. 348 win bullets, a Gonic 45 cal that shoots 400gr. paper patch bullets, and am currently building up a White super 91 with a 375 tube that will shoot 9.3mm bullets and a yet to be made paper patch design. Brownells back ordered the banded front sight on me, but once that shows up I will just about have that rifle done. So yeah, more calibers and great entertainment. I like picking up those old neglected muzzle loaders for very little money and building them up into something fun.

While I cast for many cartridge guns and round balls for muzzle loaders, this is my only bullet for a muzzle loader.

These are Lyman 451114 bullets for the muzzle-loading Parker Hale Volunteer rifle. Loaded with 90 gr (by weight) of FFFg blackpowder these 450 gr bullets make 1300 fps and two-inch groups at 100 yards, with the factory iron sights. I'm delighted with the gun and the bullets.

Take care, Tom

Tom, those are very nice boolits. Nobade I can't even go into your league with the custom stuff. I'll just say that I have had great enjoyment with my 32 and 36 for small game and just easy plinking. I like the workhorse 50 and 54 for general shooting. I have a couple of 58s that I am trying to do some load development for. Looking forward to hunting with those since they are too big to plink with. I have a couple of muzzleloading shotguns that I like to turkey hunt with. I think the one that I enjoy most is my TC 56 smooth bore. I just like shooting patched round ball and the ability to make a 28 gauge shotgun out of it. It is simply a hoot taking it squirrel hunting. It is great fun.

Good Cheer,

I have a couple .350 with fast twist that I have tons of fun with.
Check out these threads.

I also have a couple White's in 40 caliber with the fast twist 1-16 and I have a couple White's in .504 caliber with 1-24

I have owned a few of the .451 White's with a 1-20 twist

As Nobade hinted at, finding the right bullet and or mould is the whole key to the project.

Over the years I have had 3 "custom" moulds made, to scratch the small caliber itch........

I think about the ML guns mentioned in Ned Roberts book lots of 30 caliber........................................... .........................:bigsmyl2:

Not able to cast for every M/L I have had, the .17 smooth bore took a steel BB and the bowling ball mortar took to much lead. I did cast round ball for a two inch canon which shot better than the juice cans with concrete. The last gun I used in competition is a .62 cal under hammer that does good with round ball.

I have a T.C. renegade that i have collected .50 cal 1/48, .50cal 1/28, .54cal 1/48 and a .58 1/48 twist barrels for and all i shoot is bullets. When i have time i will try out any boolits i find. I also have a T.C. Hawken .50 cal that i want to find or have a .36 and .45 cal. barrel made for. These would also be for boolit shootin.

well I would generally agree that the more calibers the better but my current situation is having a .54 hawkens percussion and want to try a flint , most inexpensive flints are .50 cal and that is too close , I know I will head to the range with the .50 and .54 balls or vise versa , :groner:so I am looking for another.54 but flint

Well, around here you can't hunt with less than 45 caliber either. But you can sure have a good time at the range shooting tiny little groups at long range and amazing the modern gun guys. The main thing a smaller caliber can do that a big one can't is get more shots per pound of powder and lead, have a bullet with a better B.C. for long range (with a reasonable weight) and not kick you so hard you can't stand to shoot it. I especially enjoy the 35 caliber one, recoil is about like a .223 and it groups barely above MOA at least to 300M, the furthest I have shot it yet. And I brought the new .375 home the other night, so soon I'll get to see what that will do. Pretty much a caseless 38-55 as far as performance and recoil.

I have 4 50 cals and a BP 12 gauge. Does that count? I just bought the 12 gauge a few months ago and hunted dove with it. It was challenging. Glad my livelihood didnt depend on it.

Wow. What caliber to do next!
