Does anyone have a load for 1886 ( Winchester Jap replica) for the 525 grain bullet that they would care to share? This is the Lyman 458125 RN. (plain base) I realize this bullet is listed at 500 grains but my mold is throwing bullets that average 524.6 grains with the alloy I am using which is, for all practical purposes, straight WWs.

Yes. I know it won't feed from the magazine when seated out where it belongs plus when seated deep enough to feed the powder space is extremely limited and there is nothing to crimp into so I will be single loading. Yes, the throat will accept the bullet because I throated it to allow the cartridge with this bullet to chamber.

Will the twist stabilize this bullet? I don't know because I can't find reliable data for this rifle to load up any ammo to find out. Quite a bit of data for the Marlin and Rugers but not sure if it is applicable to the 1886. Ergo, need data specific to the 1886 action strength.

I wish I could Find the link for Paco Kelly's article on the relative strength of actions. I am very interested in your results as well as I have a repo '86 as well.

...............If it has an 18" twist it should stabilize it just fine. The TD Springfields did well with a 500gr boolit and I believe they had a 20" twist. My Whitworth muzzle loader stabilizes a 530gr boolit. I've shot it to 600 yards, and it too has a 20" twist.

Lyman 4th edition cast boolit book 5744 25.0 grains 1088 fps C.U.P. 14,200 of course this is a trapdoor load but should be fun in your rifle.
If you don't have the Lyman 4th edition cast boolit manual there is a lot of info there.

what is different with the new 86 action? my older hornaday manual lists the 86 and the marlin 95 as the same requirements for load developement is why i ask...always thought the winchester and marlin had the same strength for the loading so i use the lever action data for all levers.

like is mentioned above tho...the springfield loads will dang sure be safe enough for the winny.

Tom ADC: Are you sure about "5.0 gr" of 5744?

That sounds pretty light.

I use 25 gr of 5744 for 1250 fps.

Typo? Definately needs checked.
