The bore mic to .310 and is in really good shape can i paper my .308 to get them up to the .312 range and make them shoot like i want. Thanks for the help!

In my 303, I size .304, 2 wraps of 16# paper and final size .314. Lyman 311414 shoot into 1.5" with issue sights.

Welcome to paper patching!:drinks:

I have a Lee 180gr .311 mold and the castings patch up to .318 with printer paper and those are a finger fit into unsized case necks. The 'bore-riding' shank patches to .311. That would be as good a place as any to start out. They wouldn't work in the magazine as the boolits would get moved but my normal PPCB's are made and seated in the same way and those do not move in the case mouth in the magazine. Those are smooth sided and are 208gr.

I dry wrap using finger twisting to tighten the patch. My lubing is done by rolling the patched boolit on a case lube pad. In a way dry wrapping is easier but the standard method is wet wrapping. docone31 recommends using a cig roller for wrapping and it does work.

Good luck!

I size to .308. Two wraps of notebook paper, size it to .314. I run full tilt loads and the patch makes a real shiny bore!
I am satisfied with that.

I haven't established what the best alloy hardness is. I am currently trying straight scrap drain-pipe with some of the soldered jointing thrown in. The alloy is fairly soft but seems to hold together and expand well at the velocities I'm using. It's the softness of the alloy that lets me get away with smooth sided boolits as the paper can grip it as it sizes into the bore.

I've been casting for a 303 that wouldn't shoot factory .312 bullets. They would keyhole.I had to size at .314 and seat the bullet out a ways.

I have three .303's and they all like a fat boolit of at least 0.314".

So far my paper patching for these guns has given mediocre to poor results but my mould casts slightly under bore size so I am going to lap it out to bore size or maybe a couple thou over.

Regular fat cast boolits do very well though.

Slug your throat and size boolits to just fit the throat.

My success - limited as it may be - has been with as fat as possible boolit to fit the throat. I am having difficulty with my mint bore - which is a LE I* re-barreled with a No4 barrel, so it'll have the same throat config as yours. The problem is it seems to need bore-riding boolits and therein lies the problem. It means a portion of the boolit shank is under bore diameter. Some folks have had success with half patches, leaving the bore-ride section exposed and bore-riding.

sorry for three posts but 303guy you are the one three others said to talk to so if you have any pet loads for the old 303s you love i would love to know them and im more than likely not the only one thanks agine.

Thanks for the confidence.:) A seemingly promising load was 40gr AR2209/H4350 under a 196gr boolit with the free space filled with wheat bran. The wheat bran may be the cause of inconsistent results by virtue of it protecting the patch base resulting in it clinging the boolit in flight. I'll be dropping the wheat bran filler. Velocity was 2250fps and pressure was middle of the road with room to increase but not too low. Recoil was pleasant - a push rather than a kick.

My pig gun is a sweet little beast and does fairly well with 30gr AR2209/H4350 under a 206gr boolit again with wheat bran filler. In this one the wheat bran is needed to compensate for the low load density with that powder. Velocity is 1600fps. I'm going to try upping the load and dropping the wheat bran. This gun needs a little more velocity if it's going to perform on pigs (I think). I've gone as high as 40grs AR2209/H4350 and the patch does not seem to fail (It has a rust enlarged bore!)
