I have molds which have 8-36 threads on the sprue screw and the sprue screw lock screw. Other newer molds have 8-32. Now I have found one which has 8-32 on the sprue screw and 8-36 on the lock screw. It is not the end of the world but it appears that some where along the switch from one owner (perhaps the Leisure Gp.) they did some strange things. From what have seen they had some quality problems a few years a go.

I've never seen a Lyman sprue plate screw that wasn't either 10 x 32 or 10 x 36, and all the locking screws I've seen were 8 x 32.

Doesn't mean your's aren't, that's for sure. Lyman/Ideal is an old company, they started way before thread sizes were standardedized here. Love to see pics of yours.

Now as to your statement that Lyman had some quality problems a few years ago, a few years ago? How about today? I've had some good luck with a lot of their recent stuff, but lots of others here haven't.

Perhaps the 8-36 threads were stripped and a previous owner re-threaded them to 8-32.

Now THAT would be a machining trick!

Man, oh, man, I don't think my non-machinist face has ever been redder.

I've cross tapped a different pitch of the same stud size screw in a threaded hole before when the original screws were no longer available. It can be made to work. An 8-36 tapped hole in a piece of steel can be turned into an 8-32 in a pinch . It wouldn't work after the hole was stripped, but if the original screw got stripped or lost, it could be an option.

It's amazing what you can do with tools at hand and determination :redneck:
