I started to fabricate a set of Unertl type scope mounts.

Thought some of you might find interest in following along....

The mount is now complete, it will need to be taken apart and files and sanded to remove tool marks. But good enough for this weekend.

Very nice. And well thought out.
Have you shot it yet ? Am wondering if you have determined a conversion factor ? What does .001 or lets say .010 or even .020 equil in MOA at lets say at 100 yds. ?
I wouldn't worry too much about putting any kind of binding to the adjusters. First, I doubt, unless someone messes with the thimbles in the first place, you would have any trouble and second, the old timers wrote down what sight settings they used and referred back to these settings for any range and were quite often close or right on. Using what you have put togeather using a micrometer thimble, if you have good mounts to begin with, repeatability should be very close.
After thought, someone correct me if wrong.
Micrometer stems and thimbles are 40 TPI. I- E, 40 TPI = .025 per revolution and if I am not mistaken most ring makers made their adjustment the same @ 40 TPI so any adjustments made to your system should be the same as any of the old scope makers, In other words, with scope bases set the same as one of the old time makers ( say 7.25 " C to C ) then the MOA adjustments should be the same .

Nice job.

Just two questions - first, is there a reason why you used a square hole for the tube to go through instead of a round one? Was it for cosmetics? Or was there a functional purpose as well?

Second, how is the Allen screw holding the dovetail tight? Is there a split in there somewhere that I don't see? Does the screw push on a gibb or something like that?

It looks like a nice piece. I'm just trying to get my head around how you did it & why you chose the details that you did.

is there a reason why you used a square hole for the tube to go through instead of a round one?Easier to work with and the Unertls use a "semi" square hole. Just looks more period correct.

Second, how is the Allen screw holding the dovetail tight? More easily explained in the article I wrote on the web page.

I finished the mount today.......took it all apart and recoated it in a flat finish....more better!

I also modified the ends of the threaded adjusters to have more area up against the scope tube.

The article explains all this.

I did get out shooting yesterday with fantastic results. Very pleased with how this turned out.
