Sprucing up ugly secondhand grips

I had to replace the grips on my long barreled Vaquero and found for cheap money a set of carved micarta grips. So I took some black model paint (acrylic) and painted the grips and then rubbed off the high spots with 0000 steel wool. This is the result.
