I bought some stuff from an estate and it included some 30-30 ammo loaded with cast boolits, Not owning a 30-30 at the time and not wanting the ammo to go to another person because of being unsure of the load in the cartridge I pulled the bullets, this left a gas check in the neck and a primed and charged case!

My question is how to remove the gas check with out firing the cartridge?

Push it inwards to turn it sideways with a punch or an allen wrench then pull it out with needle nose pliers.

Just had the exact same problem yesterday except .357 Mag.

If your primary goal is to make the powder inert and toss the ammo safely just push the gas checks in with a dowel and spray WD40 into the case.

If you press one side in to turn it side ways , you can also bend it with the same tool so that it will just fall out.
They bend real easy.

C'mon Delta, you know the answer to that is to buy a .30-30! I'd get an H&R as the newer ones are pretty strong (they chamber them for the .500 S&W).

Don't own a 30-30? Seems almost Un American. I just got my first about a year ago and it is a HOOT.

Having picked on you about enough, seems to me to be cheap insurance to knock them down and then use the components to make what you need. Mom's Roses will like the powder.

I have a 30-30, actually 2 of them, both are 1967 Win Canadian Commemoratives, one is about 80%, the other went through Katrina and may be able to made into a shooter, but wont be pretty.

I turned the decapping pin upside down in a LEE universal decapping die because the pin pierced the first gas check before pushing it into the case and all went well after that and I salvaged the gas checks.

The powder charge was 14 gr Bullseye.

Thanks for the suggestion.

You know, just off the top of my head without looking at a loading manual, that seems like a lot of Bullseye. It may be a perfectly safe load, but things happen.

One more reason that I don't like to shoot anybody else's reloads.

Yup....a lot of Bullseye. Are you sure it was Bullseye?
