I have had a Win 94 - 44 magnum (1 in 38) that I have been struggling to get to shoot with cast for a few years. I would work with the rifle for a couple of weeks, then get frustrated and set it aside for a while. In the beginning, I was trying to get the rifle to shoot cast my way, with the bullet and powders I wanted it to.

Recently, I decided I was going to give it one more try, the rifle's way. If results were no better, this rifle was being sold to someone happy shooting factory.

I went out on a limb, and made the big investment in a Lee 200 RNFP mold. The mold casts about .430 - .431, and I put 8 grains of Unique in some cases and took it to the range. All of a sudden, I see some potential, and have a base point to work with.

This load is about like a .44-40, which is actually quite handy for a walk around the woods, shoot varmints in the back field rifle. I could live with it.

Is anyone using the similar RCBS or Lyman mold(s)? What diameter are you getting with wheelweights? If things are looking up, I might want to be considering a nicer mold.

Life is finally good with this one.

Just another reason to hang on to your carbine. 45 2.1 has designed two boolits for these 1 in 38" twist rifles. A 209 grn plain based RNFP and a 207 grn gas checked RNFP. I was planning on running a group buy on both of these (probably the plain based version first) in the near future. Just waiting to get a little breathing room on the group buy board so I can announce this one.

Sounds like it would be a good cowboy action boolit Dutch. I am abou to start shooting a 44Mag Marlin1894. Would they work well in this? I assume the rifle is a microgroove, it is NIB and was oroginally sold a year or so ago. I forgot to check when I was at the shop, now I'm waiting for the paperwork to come through.

the rcbs 200 rf will only cast out at about 429 so it wont work for you.

RCBS also makes a cowoy action mold that they list as 429 - 431 in the Midway catalog. I wonder about that one.

Working with smaller diameter bullets can be just that frustrating.

On the other hand, the results can make the reward worth the climb, huh?

The plan is to order these two RNFP's to drop from the mold at least .434" and maybe a little fatter. That should provide a fat enough boolit for the Marlins whether micro-groove or ballard. I have a Marlin 1894SS with ballard rifling that slugs at .431" which likes .433" diameter boolits; so I need something fat enough to size down to .433" myself.

It seems that if your micro-groove barrel is smooth enough and free of constrictions one of these boolits might just be the ticket. They certainly will be fat enough for the oversized Marlin bores.

Dutch,

I am very interested in the 207 grn gas checked version as I cannot prevent the Lee 200 rnfp from leading in my Win Legacy .44.

For those interested, I just put up the Group Buy thread on the PB version designed by 45 2.1. The gas checked version will be run after the plain based version is sent it to Lee.
