A couple of weeks ago I swapped a Remlin Guide Gun for a Ruger #3 in .45-70. The buttstock was missing about 1/2 it's finish and the front sight was broken. I have about 8 coats of Min-Wax Satin Tung Oil Finish on the stock set and I'm about to put it back together. I had one of these when I was younger and I'm glad to have another.

It's back together and I'm waiting for the Leupold 1.5-5X20 and Leupold QD rings to come in.

Sounds like you enjoyed fixing it up. What's the chance we could see a picture or two of it?

I don't plan on shooting real hot loads in it. I have the Lee 405HB mold and I'll probably stay around 1300-1400 fps.

With loads like that, it should be comfortable to shoot all day long.

No.3's. Real guns for real people. If only they had made a .41 mag!

I probably won't shoot blackpowder through it because I don't like cleaning guns.

i find that when i configure the rite boolits to the bore and use real bp in my 5 45-70's that the clean-up is faster then any smokeless loads i ever shot thru them. the bolistol/water mix really takes the fouling out in a hurry providing i haven't leaded the barrel...then it takes some solvent to scrub the small bits of lead out as well........this is infinitely easier then cleaning smokless powder residue out and very much faster then cleaning the jacketing from jacketed bullets that leave copper-wash n brass in my super clean barrels.

i run 2 or 3 bolistol soaked patch's thru the barrel a couple times each then clean dry patch's thru till its dry then oil n forget till i get ready to soak out the oil for the next shooting session....not trying to talk you into bp however i also dont want you to miss out on the funnest kind of shooting for worries about the old wives tales concerning the cleaning of a rifle...[especially single shots] that have shot greese groove boolits with black powder........but if you dont want another sickness to worrie over then you are far better off leaving the bp alone becouse of the addictiveness of this powder in single-shot rifles.

have fun with your ruger as i know you will...mine is a #1 in 45-70 and it is the shiss--nitts for all types of shooting including wrapped round balls with black powder up thru power-house loads with 3031 and rl-7 loads.

again...nice job and would really like to hear bout your accuracy loads and at what ranges.

I've shot tons of black powder, but with smokeless I don't have to clean at all.

There will always be some blow back into the action.

thanks for sharing the photo's of your new prize. wasn't trying to talk you into anything and shooting smokeless is a hoot as i also shoot the new fangled stuff myself. just had a browning hunter re-barreled with a #4 contour octagon barrel that is 30 inches long and the break in jacketed 220 hornadays will all stay inside .620 inch at 100 for as long as i want to set n clean the yellow out every shot. think she is ready for my 250 and 330 cast boolits now so the fun just keeps on goin.

again...very nice rifle and it will serve way better then the rem-lin i bet...lol

Nice looking rifle, my friend is a garage gunsmith/dealer in Sydney and has a NIB Ruger No1 in 45/70 for sale, I really don'ty need it as I have a trapdoor in 45/70 and would only run BP or BP level loads, but I really would like it! I wil have a look when I get there. I reckon if it has nice wood I won't be able to resist it. I use Moose Milk and Bore Snakes as well for BP, great stuff.

I tried 12.5 grains of Unique and a 340 grain hard cast bullet to get on the paper, and it shot really well at 25 yards with almost no recoil. I then switched to 30 grains of IMR-4198, a CCI LR Primer, Starline cases, a 405 grain hard cast Georgia Arms bullet with an OAL of 2.550 and shot a sub-1" group at 50 yards. This is the 1st 3 shot group at 100 yards. I adjusted the scope and shot a 10 shot 100 yard group that was about 2" including a called flyer. Most of them were in one ragged hole.

Nice group, nice rifle and the perfect scope for it!

I have had several #3 over the years but have ambivalent feelings about them. They are light and handy. I like S/S because they are easy to load for with no concern about COL or ogive shape.

My complaints about the #3:

1). The ugly, uncomfortable, chintzy butt plate.

2). The barrel band. Give it a nice contoured forend. A plain tip would be better than what it had but a cap might be nice too.

I have always blamed the looks on the 'Cowboy' nostalgia craze. Personally I am not in to nostalgia.

All the Ruger single shots lack good options for either open or peep sights. To bad there wasn't some nice way to install an adjustable peep. This is a shame for a light knockabout game gun as a scope upsets both the looks and balance.

Swampman,

What bases are you using? I recently got a set of Weaver, then found the first set I bought. Still havn't mounted a scope on either of my #3's , but have narrowed the scope choices down to four (three with post reticles) that I have accumulated.

The 45-70 was my bean field gun last year, but no joy. Will try again next month. Saw two nice bucks and five does eating beans last evening. Dropping down to 457122 hollow points this season if I can find time to load them.

cobroller: I just cast a batch of 457122s of air cooled 55/50 ww & PB and am wondering what load you're planning to use with yours? I've got a #1 and a Browning 1885 along with a Remlin to put them through for deer and hogs. GF

Wow! How good is that??? Beans and meat out of the same paddock!

I will probably start with 56 grains of Varget and work up.. Lyman has 62 as max for the lever action, but the #3 works me over pretty good even with a slip on recoil pad.

Very high priced meat by the way. They eat a lot of $13/bushel soybeans.

I am surrounded by NZ dairies. I am not sure the KIWI's calculated zero rainfall into their paddock rotation

I'm using Weaver bases. They seem fine and were on the gun when I bought it..
