The 1-S is just the standard sporter configuration with the sights, barrel band and Alex Henry forend isn't it?

There is one for sale (NIB), pretty cheap, but no pic at this stage. The dealer is a good old guy, specialises in black powder, owned up to being 86 a few years ago, still smithing and trading from his garage in Sudney. I will take a run to Sydney and have a look at it I think.

My Ruger No. 1 Medium Sporter is marked 1S. It has a heavier barrel coutour than the Standard Sporter, and is lighter than the Tropical. Mine happens to be chambered for 9.3x74R, but is the same model as the 45-70. I think you'll like it; I like mine.

I have ended up with a pair of 338WMs, a 1B and a sporter (having trouble trying to figure out which one to keep) and a 416 Rigby, which I love, but in reality, I would be much better off with a 45/70, a rifle I have always wanted since I saw an article by Bob Milek (I think it was him) about hunting leopards or panthers or similar.

I have a custom 45/70 (fat) Gould mould that I got from a group buy here.

I have a trapdoor, so I hardly need a 45/70, butttttttttttttttttt, it would be nice, lol.

Ya can't have enough 45-70s... I have a trapdoor, a rolling block, a bolt action (Enfield), a contender (16 and 1/4 inch with muzzle tamer), a Ruger #1, and a double rifle, all in 45-70. Each and every one is a bundle of fun to shoot and I wouldn't trade them for the world. And I get to experiment with all different weights of boolits and loads. (Going to have to get me another Marlin soon...)

You'll get a LOT more boom for the buck out of the Ruger. The high-pressure loads (50K CUP) are just the ticket for those Wooly Mammoth down there. [smilie=w:

IIRC: The list price on the 1-S is around $1250

I have one and love it. I just bought a peep sight from a member on here and can't wait to put it on. They apparently made a ton of these rifles and in the past they were very reasonable used. I think I paid $450 US for mine. Pretty light for max loads though in my opinion.

I recall a John Wooters article on a leopard hunt with a .45-70 Ruger--sure made me want one. I was always too susceptible to magazine pieces--now the internet is worse! My 1S in .45-70 was light, short, and handy-22" barrel. Didn't shoot it enough to really get good loads going.....

Thats the one I saw probably, a picture of him and a few native guides sitting in the tree with the leopard spread out and the rifle in plain sight. I couldn't quiet visualise it before, but you have jogged my memory, thanks.

IBlaze, I thought that I was a sick man, I have a BPCR and a H&R LBH Trapdoor, my 1895 Marlin was traded for a 444 as I was curious about that and I have another 1975 built 1895 that I sold it to a friend who went broke and was going to do some rust bluing for me in exchange for ir, but we live way apart now, I might try and get it back.

The old Gubbermint round is fascinatong.

Australian Aboriginals refer to whites they aren't particularly fond of as a 'Gubber.' It is also an often used term of endearment for good friend who is a well liked 'whitefella.' If it is used face to face in a friendly manner it is a great compliment.

It comes from the old use of the title 'Governor' who ran the lock up. Not their favourite person.

Useless trivia, I am a mine of it, lol.
