What do folks suggest for alloys to use whilst hunting with my Krags, Winchester Model 94, 03 Springfield and the like?
My boolits: 311284, 314299, 311299, 311291...
Thanks,
Mark

I use 55% lead, 45% WW and about 1% added tin for my air cooled and aged [4 weeks] hunting boolits.

I have used 20-1 for deer for a lot of years with no complaints. All flatpoints in 45, 35 and 30 calibers.

Is the 311299 design suitable for taking deer at 1800-2000 fps with the 50/50 WW/Pure alloy? Or does it need an HP?

Mark, the biggest thing is to not get caught up in the "hard cast" hype. Diamonds are expensive and NOT needed.
I shoot my 308, 30-30, 7-08 and more with air cooled clip-on WW +2% tin to 2,000+ fps with zero leading and good accuracy. Proper bullet fit is the key.
The 311284 is a round nose bullet and I would suggest sticking with a flat point for deer & larger.

I used to believe that I needed a harder alloy
for hunting but have found thru range work that
softer alloys work just as well and have a plus for hunting
malleability.....fit is it

Depends of course on many factors. For HP 900- 1200 fps 20-1. Iuse 45-70 for white tail deer

50% wheelweight / 50% pure lead will come out 22-25 BHN when water dropped from the mold. Good alloy for above 2,000 fps as it is hard, but not brittle, and will expand a lttle without coming apart or flattening out. Punches through and breaks bone reliably too.
