View Full Version : My cousin gave me a lead ingot. Anyone want to guess it's composition?

My gut tells me it's a bar of 6% antimony/94% lead. Not pure lead for sure, but I don't think it's linotype.

If someone could ID this I could label it and put it away. If no one knows what it is, I'll have to melt it down and test it with my Lee tester.

Thanks for any help.

My first thought was linotype, but no way to be sure. I have seen COWW melted and poured into old linotype molds.

it looks like a printers bar, lino, stereotype, or? no way for us to tell we need to know hardness and melting temp ,

Drop it on a concrete floor. If it "Thuds", it's pretty soft. If it "Rings", it's harder.

My Lee tester says it's 20.9 BHN, so I'm going to assume that it's lino.

I worked my way through university, melting, then casting these for the linotype machines of a big city daily paper. The fineness of the logo casting alone tells me you have lino there.

It's no good, too hard.
Send it to me and I'll dispose of it for you.
You could scan it and email it.

All ingots I have got that are that shape are linotype.
With a BHN of over 20, it would be safe to assume it is lino.... dale
