My beerchecks just smeared my barrel with enough alum. to require about a half hour of scrubbing to get it all out. I sized .002 larger than bore. Load was 16gr. of 2400 with a 175gr. 311291. I believe the thin beer can alum. burned through. Yes, the contents of the cans where consumed on a different occasion. What could I have done wrong?

I use .008" aluminum stock in my .30-06...no problems...you may have to do the same.

You could try double thickness of discs ,let us know your progress. Gerry.

Unless your GC shank is a good bit larger than the norm one layer of can matl.(.004-.005) is not going to work very well .On average for a 30 cal. .010-.014 matl.seem to work well for the most of us. Sure it was alum. fouling and not just lead or antimony wash. BTW were you shooting these in a chromed bore? I remember another member having alum. fouling issues in a chrome lined barrel.

Yes, Im sure that it was alum. fouling. I felt with my fingers the 1/4" long groove width strips of alum. after I pulled them off of my cleaning patches. My Win. 94 Centennial has only fouled lead when I tried something stupid, and has never had a j-word fired through it.

The single layer beerchecks stayed on ok, but if I put my fingernail to them, they would pop right off.

Single layer is way too little. You are going to need 2-3 layers for .30cal.

Check material = (sizing diameter - shank diameter) divided by two.

Another possibility:

You don't mention the bore type.
Is the bore chrome lined?

There have been a number of similar observations on this forum with the chrome lined bore and aluminum gas checks smearing.

Any rough bore would also be suspect.
